Why? Because the paint protects the cars. Regardless if you like it or not, the railroads just got some free weather protection on their cars. But if the numbers are covered, it forces the railroad to correct. I can see this. The vast majority of tagging I have seen has the road numbers. I have even seen taggers reproduce the road numbers in their own style.
Yes, we all know why MTL patched the numbers. But it is not necessarily. Again.. save the numbers!
