I rode on that car when it was part of the Spirit of Washington dinner train around 2002.  The corrugations were metal, but much shallower than Budd corrugations.  They were just a cosmetic veneer over the real sides.  I'm guessing the model will use something like a shadow-line paint job to simulate that.

George

I figured as much. Well guess I get to build another!!

Hmmm, could a Skytop observation be far behind?  Maybe a Little Joe?

Here's a much better shot of the corrugation on the Dinner Train's dome car... definitely not Budd corrugation...

ince the main differences between the Santa Fe and GN full domes are limited to the sides, it wouldn't be hard for Kato to offer both.  As they have already done passenger sets for ATSF, GN, and BN, they should sell well.  Then there are all of the paint schemes used on them as private cars after Amtrak.

I know, the GN and BN set cars are mostly incorrect, but they seem to have sold well, and a Great Dome to match would likely find a market.

Yes, a Kato Santa Fe full dome would be great.

In doing some research on the Milwaukee Road Super Domes on the DOME.main website I learned that a proposal was presented to the Santa Fe for PS to build corrugated cars for the line.  Details likely can be found in the Pullman Collection of the Newberry Library, Chicago, Il.  A real surprise to say the least.

The more ambitious (foobie oriented) modeler could build a model using corrugation from, say, a Kato Super Chief sleeper car with the corrugation being added in the letterboard and lower car side and skirting as would be appropriate.  Below is a drawing of what the purposed car might have looked like...

much easier and more accurate to build a proper Budd ATSF full dome using the Bachmann car, and better yet, using the Bachmann car as a base for the M&R sides...
This will be a nice car for those Milwaukee road modelers IF Intermountain actually releases it...I've had three separate 'reservations' cancelled...sure would be nice to see this one come to fruition!

I believe this is the same dome car that the Royal Gorge Railway is using as well. I rode one a few summers ago.

Ben

The Royal Gorge has two different dome cars.  I was able to see them right next to each other last Friday.  Quite a bit of difference between the two.  I'll have to see if I got any pictures.

Royal Gorge's cars are two Budd Big Dome lounge cars (ex-ATSF), CRRX 507 and 553,  and two PS Super Dome lounges, CRRX 50 and 56.  As far as I know the cars remain in Holland America paint, which is really surprising to me since they put forth such an effort to get much of the other passenger cars repainted for the line.

If they ever get around to repainting one of the Super Dome cars it likely will look something like this...
