Six Axle Tank Car

I built this car a few years ago, but couldn't post photos at the time. The body was made using two Athearn 62' cars. The trucks are Union Terminal Imports that came with their DODX tank flat. They imported several extra trucks. All other parts, less brake details are scratched.

The Six Axle Cars had a very complex hand brake linkage.

Bobby,

very nice build, as is norm for you. I have a couple of questions, if you do not mind.

I can not get the stencil enlarged enough to read so not sure of capacity. The tank looks quite long in your model photos. The max. allowable weight on rails for a normal trucked car is or was 263,000 pounds. My guess would be with the 6 axle trucks that are probably 150 ton these were legal as 310,000 max weight on rail. Possibly the FRA gave them a special dispensation for these cars. ? ? ?
Did General American build enough of these to be used in commerce or were they a special test build ?

At any rate, excellent job on all the details and the weathering is awesome. Have you ever thought of trying to build a Hazmat Safety Train car such as AMOCO and Chevron had ?

Thank you Carl. Yes, these were 150T cars and were in Butadiene and Vinyl Chloride service. They were in number series 94650-94706 for a total of 57 cars. They were built may-dec 1968. 113,000 lbs Lt wt, 281,000 lbs LD lmt, 394,000 gross wt, 38,500 gal. All were gone by July 1980.
I owned a OMI safety tanker, but sold it.

Thanks for the reply Bobby. i have the OMI, Ajin made, Chevron 'Safety Train' training car # CHVX 911R and would sure like to make an N scale version.
I see a project coming. Just what I need, another project.

Nice looking tank car.  I don't recall ever seeing 6 axle tank cars before.

Scott, there were lots of six and eight axle tank cars until the early 2000s when most of those that remained timed out due to the 40 year rule.
The exception is the CELX acetic acid six axle cars, they were given a ten year extention.
