Managed to get my two NCE decoders installed today.  Now I'm down to two Kato units and a FVM to get decoders for.  :D  Unless I buy more locomotives

One installation confused me though.  Had decoder installed, but on track and system shut down, detected a short.  Double checked things, back on track, still show short.  Took trucks out, set one truck on track, short detected.  Other truck on track, no short.  Tore truck apart, cleaned up, reassembled, no short.  Reassembled locomotive, short detected.  WTF.  Took motor out (GP40-2), stuck in SD35 motor.  A little difference in length, but still long enough for everything to connect.  Reassembled locomotive, on track, runs fine.  Want to get a slow speed motor any way, but I've never had that happen before.

As always, so much good work!
Really need to step up my weathering game to run with the Big Boys here  8)

Posted this on my Layout Engineering thread https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=24399.msg453224#msg453224  but forgot to stick it up here.
Finally was able to finish a "How To" on replacing Caboose ground throws with SparkFun slide switches:

Craigolio, very good timing for me.
Spent the last week relaying some flex track for better/smoother curves. And over Summer, I had to pull up my small 7 track stub yard. One turnout was popped out of rail joiners and bent from moving last year. :(  But good came from that, as I could lay some music wire in plastic sheaths under a few tracks for turnout control.
Need to watch that video now, and see about replacing my Caboose Industries ground throws.
 Thanks,
 Joe D

Just a quick note:
Music wire is great if no soldering involved.
(i.e. wire bent through switch toggle & bent down into Atlas C55 throwbar).

If any soldering necessary, then use brass (music wire doesn't hold solder).

If any soldering necessary, then use brass (music wire doesn't hold solder).

It can be soldered, but it needs acid-based flux.  Brass or phosphor-bronze are much easier to solder using non-acidic fluxes.

I went real gentle on it. I'm planning on using it with my 70s stuff, so it wouldn't be toast yet. Yet.

Evergreen's.... they do get dirty....one's an MTL car, one's a decal job....don"t remember which is which....

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Yeah. Bear in mind that SP ran mostly through deserts. Lots of dust, very little rain. So there's not going to be much rust, but a lot of quickly accumulated grunge that is rarely rinsed away.

With the exception of the cars routed through SP's freight car wash facility.
