Attending the Vancouver Train Expo a few weeks back motivated me to do a little more work on the layout. I was able to finish (almost) the highway overpass at Mile 584.5. The concrete highway bridge was built by Railwire member Doug Davies BCR 751 and painted/weathered by me. I am representing late September in the Pine Pass where the golden deciduous trees mix in with the dark green Pine and Spruce.
Happy Modeling.

When are you going to come over and paint my backdrop?

Hi Pud, there's a simple way to add icicle breakers to F-units, using #10 office staples.  Easy to shape and quite durable.  I'm having trouble getting images and links in the post.  Doesn't work like it used to for me.  Hopefully something gets through, otherwise try this link for a look.

You have a layout?  Pictures or it doesn't exist.   :D

Chris:  Excellent modelling and photograph; congratulations.  From someone who has been there, very reminiscent of the locale.  And yes, in your era the bridges over Highway 97 were much cleaner than they are now.

Chris (@BCOL 747), I really like your bridge! Nothing about it that says "model". It just looks so amazingly real.

Got to clean things up a little bit. Overdid the glue reinforcements. Maybe a new sign, possibly one printed in photo paper and larger.

There's a new N scale modeller out there today..... he's grown up with N scale; been to countless train shows, been interviewed in local papers about model railroading and has worked a major Canadian train show at a manufacturer's booth.... but today he took brush in hand and weathered his first, of what I hope and expect, will be many, many cars....

Introducing Sam..... Puddy Junior..... My 12 year old son.... and his D &RGW 50' plug door car....

He bought this and a few other cars with his own money at the Ottawa show and today he approached me - he'd found this picture...

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/drgw/drgw61402agd.jpg

... and he wanted to try weathering....

Now, a father's pride aside, I think he did a pretty good job for a first attempt, and with only a little demonstrated help (on another car) from the old man....

Gotta tell ya; this made the day very special..... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Finally finished installing the N Scale Architect Excel Feed Mill on the layout.  Ten sub-units had to be arranged to fit the available space and then all of the overhead piping cut to length.  There was no way this OF could lean over the layout long enough to install it piece by piece so I built it on the workbench.  Here's a view while still on the bench but before 450 feet of chain link with barbed wire fencing was installed and the piping was painted.

Here are a couple of views installed on the layout.  Sorry for cell phone focus on the second photo.

Also finished installing all of the handrails on the Milwaukee Road SW1 re-paint.  Those two little handrails from the rear cab door to the deck took and hour to get back on.  I have a second unit almost done and the same rails broke while trying to remove them so I made new brass cab handrails for that one.

Best regards,

Roger

Really nice!!!  Your "Little Man" has reason to be proud... I first thought it was the prototype shot... and Dad does too!!!

Again, a really nice model!!!  Didn't know about it but may have to look into buying one myself for future use... (like 100 years from now) LOL

I think this weekend we have been very fortunate to have struck Gold early one and it has continued all weekend... thanks everyone for sharing your efforts!!!

Made some progress on a T-Trak module I am building. Got the foam carved and coated with fusion fiber and paint. Added a few bits of fall foam to see if I like the look, ground up some leaves from outside and plan on mixing real and artificial ground cover.

That's great! Last year both my sons (8 and 10 at the time) really wanted to try weathering with chalks and decals (The Weathering Shop's rust). Was great to sit down at the table and see what they could do. I'm no weathering expert so I'm not much help but it was definitely fun to just sit around on a Sunday evening and work on trains.
Thanks for posting!

I spent the weekend participating in a NTRAK layout at the Greenberg's Train show in Wilmington, MA.  There, I ran into a fellow Railwire member: Alvin (actually he found me).  It was nice chatting with him.  My fun consisted of spending a good chunk of the time fixing fellow NTRAK-ker's locos and offering solicited and unsolicited advice.  :)  I also ran my train with a live-view camera installed in the locomotive. That is usually a big hit with the public.

I also ran my Arnold SW1 testing its pulling ability.  It pulled 35 MT 40' freight cars on a straight and level track.  But  it couldn't pull that train through the curves (due to the increased friction).  But with 20 cars it was able to pull that train over the entire layout (including an S-curve).  No grades.  That is still probably mode than a real SW1 pulled.

On Sunday there was a kid (probably around 5 or 6 years old) who just kept following the trains around our layout for a very long time. The highlight of the show for me was when I decided to give him a wireless throttle, show him how to use it and have him drive a long freight train.  He loved it!   He kept on running that train until the closing time.  His father was also very grateful.  That kid was really well-behaved:  He kept the speed low (we asked him to run at the speed step 35-40 and he was very careful to adhere to that sped).  I have a feeling that this experience will stick with him for a very long time.
