Atlas, Con-Cor, Kadee/Micro-Trains, MDC, InterMoutain.  All of them have released kits at some point in time, and all have abandoned the concept.  Unfortunately, the N scale consumer base in general wants RTR-only.

Intermountain still does kits.  Unfortunately they are tied to regular production so getting them isn't always a certainty.

Nothing against the Intermountain kits, but I don't consider them to be in the same category as Roundhouse, really, at least the ones I've gotten.   Lots of gluing on the hoppers, and every detail part has to be attached.

What I'm saying is I'm more than happy on a boxcar to snap in the floor, install couplers, and attach trucks.  The Micro-Trains fits the bill, too.

I agree - given the hobby is aging I don't see a market for multi-million part kits......

It seems that the highly-detailed with road-specific details RTR models are the latest trend in N scale.   So, many manufacturers are producing just such models.  Some manufacturers do still offer unassembled models. But those models are simply unassembled versions of the highly-detailed models that manufacturer also sells as a RTR model.

The way I read your comment seems that you would prefer simple kit with all the details molded on the body and underframe.  for that the manufacturer would have to produce a totally separate line of (Low-parts-count models The molds would have to be different. With very low sales ratio of kits compared to detailed RTR models, I don't think that is a viable business model.

Personally I prefer the delicate molded-on ladders and other parts on MT cars (rather than the clunkier out-of-scale added-on details from other manufacturers).  This is especially true in N scale where the molding technology is not yet advanced enough to make more correctly scaled added-on details.  But I don't think that any manufacturer will actually offer 2 parallel lines of the same item:  highly-detailed RTR model and a simplified kit of that model.

Here is reply when asking about direct sales vs local hobby shops :

"Our models will be available direct from us as well as select hobby retailers. We're working-on the retailer network now. "

I spoke with the company president at Trainfest on Saturday.  He was fairly tight lipped on the N scale offerings but did confirm a loco with sound.  He wouldn't say steam or diesel.  That's as far as my cross-examination skills got me :D
Best regards,

Roger

Unfortunately, I predict the same kind of "redheaded step child" syndrome from this manufacturer.  I understand HO rules in terms of sales and you must go with the $$ but  Athearn, Life Like(Walthers), Exactrail, and Broadway Limited all treat us N scalers as afterthoughts.  I don't see any better from Scale Trains, cuz they would have been diligent and announced N scale products along with the HO announcements if they were serious about the N scale market.  Thank (insert your deity or deities here) for BLMA, Wheels of Time, ESM, Rapido, FVM and Kato for taking N scale seriously.  Sorry, had to vent......BTW their HO stuff is awesome!!!

I think we can give them one mulligan here.  They couldn't get the N scale samples in time for the show.  There could be many reasons for this which have nothing to do with diligence.

I'm pretty sure based on what I've seen and read that Scale Trains won't offer much I'll be interested in, but I'm very curious how they perceive the N scale market.  Will we get some sort of museum quality line?  If nothing else, it looks like we will get a return of lower end kits at prices we haven't seen in a long time.

It's kinda hard to announce your first N scale offering without samples; even established companies get slaughtered for not having samples at announcement time by a select few. Knowing Shane and his interests, ethics and talent I firmly believe that whatever they announce will be of very good quality and will be of great interest to a significant segment of the market.

It's worth the wait for what I know will be quality. :D
