That's the forum's fault. Not mine.

Technically, as we recently established - its the phone's metadata fault . . . .

That's a very cool shot Ed regardless of the weeds. What about the depressions in the track to the right.

Thanks. Those are... the CSX Philly Sub in all its glory.

Although, the extreme telephoto really accentuates them.

Bob,

Have you used selective focus on the Galaxy S5? It says 2 objects need to be 1.5 feet apart, but I took a 1/3 shot of a loco and the rear was out of focus. I took the same pic with selective focus. Then you go into the gallery and open the pic. I can toggle between the front or the back of the loco in focus. Or hit the right button and they both merge together.

I'm sure you can get it working much better than I could.

Chris,  I seem to recall that a while back Daniel L. used this, or a similar focus-stacking feature on his smart phone while taking photos of his truck models.

My Selective Focus isn't the same as that.  I don't get a near/far option.

edit:  Okay, I see, you get that after you take the picture.

You go, Gilmore.  Welcome to the Old Dogs Learning New Tricks (ODLNT) club.

Haha!  I've been a member of that club a loooong time!

Speaking of learning new tricks, I discovered Helicon Remote for Android last night, which allows me to control my Nikon D7200 from my phone's touch screen.  Not full Nikon control, but control it as far as determining near and far focus limits (and checking exact focus by zooming in and saving those custom points).  The program determines how many exposures to make and automatically focuses on all the in-between points without putting my big ham-hands on the focusing ring and saves the shots to my phone.  Now I know why I got a 32gig SDHC card for my S5!

It will also allow other things to do with your Nikon or Canon DSLR such as time-lapse photography, exposure bracketing up to 15 exposures, and shooting video (which I haven't researched yet).

The free (demo) version is identical to the licensed version except you can only shoot "low resolution" jpg files with it.  How low-res?  I don't know yet.

I have to get an adapter cable for my phone (OTG cable) to plug my camera into my phone
so I haven't downloaded it or tried it out yet, but I will later today when I get back from Best Buy with my new OTG cable.

Here's a video to look at:

Okay...just for chits and giggles I decided to do a google search for "remote control dslr android" and there are a bunch of aps that will allow you to use your phone as a remote control for your DSLR.  Some are Canon specific, and some work with only certain dslr's or digital cameras...and there are also iPhone aps.

AND, some have a focus stacking feature.

So, Helicon Remote is not the only option.

It appears at first glance that some offer full control of your camera from your phone's touch screen as well as focus stacking and other extra features.

But, they all require an OTG cable and USB "Host support", usually meaning an upper-end phone.

More research to be done!!  :)
