New Weathering Challenge - with Prize

I've been wanting to bring back the weathering challenges for years now.  So let's start the modeling season off right!  Here's what you need to do:

1.  Pick a prototype photo of a hopper car from any era.
2.  Replicate the weathering and aging seen on the prototype photo in any scale.
3.  Post some in-progress photos or commentary.  Share and ask for techniques/help.
4.  Take a photo of your completed model without scenery and post it here. In other words, the quality of scenery should not come into play.
5.  On October 15, I'll start a poll for the members to vote for the model that they like the best.  The poll will run for a week.

The winner (as determined by the most votes) gets to pick a single item valued at no more that $20 from Feather River Trains.  Chuck will pay for domestic shipping (being the awesome guy he is), but if the winner is outside the country they are responsible for their own shipping costs.

Go ahead and get started at any time!  Just reply here...

Open or covered hopper?  Or doesn't matter?

Hmm...  I have a runner pack of 8 Micro Trains PRR H31 hoppers that need weathering, but I'm having trouble finding decent color photos of them in service.  I may have to use a GLa for reference.

Leave it to the colorblind guy to win a weathering contest with a freshly painted hopper that's bright red.

I'd start with a wash of India Ink diluted in 70% alcohol, streaked on vertically with a wide soft brush.

Oh wait...  If this can be a covered hopper, then I have some nice PRR H30s from FVM that also need weathering!

With all due respect to my esteemed colleague, I'd start with a nice even coat of Dullcote and follow that with a light wash of Burnt Umber water soluable oil paint.

That was actually my joke first!   :tommann: sent me a Facespace message at 6:05 this morning telling me to check TRW "RIGHT NOW."
I sent him this:

Josh Surkosky

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

You guys can keep joking around, I'm just glad I don't have to ban or lock anything so far.
