Problems posting with Windows 10 Edge
« on: August 12, 2015, 04:17:41 PM »
I updated to Windows 10 last night (stupid maybe, but now it's done ) and now I have a problem posting using the Win 10 built in browser Edge (IE which I used before is gone).

If I reply to a post, I cannot later do Insert Quote into that reply. Nothing happens when I select Insert Quote. To create a reply by originally selecting Quote instead works fine.

Also, the icons for insertion of such as pictures, links and emoji doesn't work either.

It is not Win 10 in itself that is the problem, since if I use another browser such as Firefox, running under Win 10, then everything works as expected. This post is edited with Firefox  :D So it seems to be Edge that is in error. Has anyone else switched to Win 10, and seen the same problems?

And please, no wise comments from all you linux/unix users

Sounds like the logic to get the cursor position in the textfield is broken.  I'll be on the lookout for a patch.

Good!

I also discovered that Edge does not support RSS Feeds. Makes it rather useless!

Then managed to find my old IE-exe in a directory on the disk (seems the Win 10 installation did not delete it after all), made it my default browser and reinstalled a shortcut on the task bar. So now I am back in business anyway. But a fix for Edge is probably a good thing all the same.

You like living on the edge, don't you?!  And I didn't even use Linux/Unix in my wisecrack.  :D

Seriously, what is the big rush to upgrade to Win 10?  Was your previous OS lacking some functionality?  After all, what is so exciting about a new operating system?  Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until at least a first major service pack (or whatever they will call it in win 10)?

I'm for example perfectly content using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; nl; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13. That is a Seamonkey 2.24 browser.   And I am also running Win 98SE on the computer which interfaces with my Alps MD printer.

And they work perfectly fine.  :)  Actually the Win98 SE machine doesn't get out much on the Internet anymore.  But my XP box does.

I'm also still on XP, mostly because anything newer probably wouldn't run on this machine, and I'm not about to buy a new PC.  Just have to make sure my antivirus is up to date, and NEVER click anything I don't recognize.

IE quit working entirely a few months back.  Even reinstalling it from Microsoft wouldn't work.  The program wouldn't even start.  So, I'm Firefox only now.

nkalanaga you should consider what Iain said. Linux.

There are many versions so it can be a bit confusing, but there are light versions that can ran blazing fast on older hardware. No antivirus needed etc. Stick to something popular but easy like Lubuntu (lighter and faster than Ubuntu) and you should be fine. You can even run it as a "live CD" without installing, just to see if you like it. Or you can "dual boot" keeping XP around until you are more comfortable with the new system.

If you are not comfortable figuring out how to do this yourself I'm sure you can find a friend or relative who is. It's really not that hard though. I would encourage you to read up on it and try it yourself.

I normally never post this kind of thing on a non tech forum, but given that you described your XP as somewhat broken I thought it appropriate.

Edit: The MATE version of Linux Mint as mentioned by John below, is what I normally install for people if they have good hardware, but I have been finding that some people prefer the simple menu layout of Lubuntu and it is noticeably faster when running on the older stuff. They are both based on Ubuntu and have the same core. LTS editions (Long Term Support) are available and recommended for the average user.
