The HOn30 slab



The rocks are all Sculptamold that I painted, then re-painted, and repainted again just to end up with the same color 3 times  :scared:

Based very loosely on a real mill that is at a near by park.

Love the mill Chris!  And love HOn30"!

The nearly complete Pope & Talbot Mill at Castlegar is a bit more modern! I just have to put the fence in around it and water + logs in the small pond in front.  I have learned a lot from this build...number one is that there is always something more to do!  When I was designing it I thought adding lots of doors would add character...well they do but then when you light the building I think the doors look strange if they aren't lit above them and if there isn't a concrete pad under them...Oh, and because the mill was retrofit into scenery not designed initially for a mill (i.e. a nice large flat surface) the scenery undulates around the buildings.  This also adds character but necessitates retaining walls, railings, etc...

Anyway, here it is nearly complete...25 white building LEDs and 4 pole mounted yard LEDs all pin connected to the low voltage supply that runs underneath.


beehive burner was modified slightly, painted and rusted up via Tom's salt technique.  The slash conveyor was augmented with some scratch parts





Here is the back side,

and the log dump/finished lumber building [the signs and tags are used in operations and easily removed]

Mark, very cool building. Looks outstanding. Makes me really want to finish the the benchwork/trackwork on the Geneva Sub done so that I can get going on some buildings.

Thank you Richie...interesting it feels uncompressed to you.  Maybe it occupies 5% of the space it should by comparison to the prototype! :)

I had not planned to add wires as operators will need to reach over the building frequently and I was worried about them getting snagged.  I may also have to add a clear plastic protective sheet in front of the sawmill - just as I have in front of the kraft mill 8' to the west) though not quite sure how I am going to do this.  Have to think about this some more...perhaps adding power lines will make the poles themselves more visible and less likely to get snagged?

Hi Michael...thank you.

The LEDs are from a variety of sources - N'gineering, Evans Design, TCS - mostly pre-wired though I have wired up some myself including pico size LEDs for the automated Train Order semaphores which is the only time I have ever needed to sue an Optivisor!  They are all surface mount LEDs either warm white or cold white.  Most are nano size.  The ones mounted on the poles in the sawmill yard are micro's I think...they came wired on small PCBs and I put a thin brass reflector behind them. 

I run the LEDs off a small 5V power supply which was originally installed to power the IR detection circuit and LED display panel for it.  I running about 60 LEDs for the two mills off of it after passing it through a potentiometer to control the overall brightness of all the LEDs...I normally run at slightly over 3 V.  The Evans LEDs also each came pre-wired with a step down resistor which was actually a hassle as I had to cut it off to pass the leads through the holes in the buildings an then solder them back in again.

The 3-5V lines are run under the workbench and I drop 22 AWG feeders to them and run these feeders up through a hole into each building terminating in a simple female two pin connector which prevents the wire from slipping back down through the hole!  The LEDs in a building are wired together in parallel and their lines soldered to a 2 pin male connector.  I leave enough slack in the feeder lines so that I can connect the LED power and then get the set the building in place.

Institute a ban on long sleeved operators  :P - scene is looking great but in the third photo it appears some scale boulders are blocking one of the doors/egress  :scared:

Received the first of my first test shots of functioning diaphragms for Kato's Budd cars from Shapeways today, in FXD.  Couple of minor tweaks to make to the design.



Also have them coming in WSF and WSFP, but the FXD appears to be strong enough and flexible enough as well as the detail being more fine.
