Tried something different.... you often see cars where the white lettering has "run" down the side of the car; clearly paint that couldn't hold up to the rigours of weather, pollution and time... Well; I tried "running": the lettering on this Canadian Pacific 50' paper boxcar (number six for those that are playing along at home...LOL)
After removing some of the lettering and dulling some with the Testors Enamel Remover I weathered the car with powders and sealed it. Then I used white pastel and a micro brush; drawing the pastel powder down the car side; rubbing it "off" with a brush and repeating. Each time some of the pastel was left on the car side. I built up the layers until I liked the look, overbrushed with a light coat of car side brown powder and "voila", you have something that looks a bit like the running paint....

New technique for the "bag"... hey; new clubs in the bag are a good thing!
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I was thinking about that too actually. A little bit of plexiglas is all you need. A clear wall.

I use plexi shields on the fascia in several places but they have been for protecting "what's on the layout" from "what's off the layout"...i.e. errant hands and elbows smashing delicate details and over-turning equipment rather than vice versa.  I add them where I see there is a problem or one will develop, for example in front of the Celgar pulp complex or the front of Nelson yard.

thx again for the suggestions.

Pud, your weathering is always really great.  This is a particularly nice example.

Lots of other great posts this weekend.  Mark Dance, that is a great looking scene!

For my part, I am just running trains and repairing Atlas turnouts.  Nothing photogenic but a lot of fun- the operating that is!

This past week, I assembled 3 more Intermountain reefer kits that I was trying to sell. Rats, 20 more to go...

Hmm... Kiz is an expert
at finding frustrating
things to do...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

And here is some video demonstrating the MARS and the nice low-speed running it has.  Couldn't be happier with it!

With snow and freezing rain for most of the day, it was a good time to stay in the basement.  I decided I liked the track arrangement so up it all came, roadbed down, track back down and ready to roll.  Time to fit the buildings in and make it flow.  Here's a distant helicopter view to get the whole scene.

Thanks for your gracious comments Mark. The RR is running pretty well at the moment and now even better when I switched to M/T medium flange wheels a few years back. They have eliminated 99.9% of derailments since doing so.
Here is something else I started over the weekend. Weathering up an NdeM box car for my friends Mexican RR.

I gave it some work using a fiber glass eraser to wear away the logo, a we bit of work with some 600 wet and dry then it received several coats of Tamiya Red/Brown mixed with Golden Titan Buff mixed with Tamiya thinners. (the Titan Buff idea is from Tom Mann and Tom it worked a treat).
Next was a wash of Burnt Sienna oil paint and a coat of Dull Cote.
Much more to do.

I didn't have much time tonight so I tackled a simple job: laying out the turnouts for an as yet to be named junction. This is a busy location in a town where the main yard lead will tie into the main, then a crossover allows some dispatcher flexibility when things get busy, which they will. This is also where a wye will branch off to carry the Plummer Branch to the other side of the backdrop and towards Plummer and it's wye junction with a short line.

The main is Peco code 55 concrete tie. I acquired a couple Atlas #10s that I finally took out of the package and hooked up. I really need one more LH #10 but some re-engineering of the junction will be called for to allow the yard lead to branch off through a #10. A #7, however, fits perfectly.  Every turnout on the mainline, the crossover, and the diverging route into the short line yard is a #10. I expect the cars running through (All mainline trains and plenty of 73' Centerbeam flats will look fantastic taking these turnouts.

Looking Northbound here. The wye to Plummer branches off on the roadbed at right.
