Came across this shot today in the Kansas Historical Society collection.

I'm trying to get my trailers right on my Super C and got a big surprise here.   This is January 1968

The "Santa Fe's" are easy, heck even Trainworx now has those RTR.   But look at what else is in here:

"Neptune"..... what the heck is that?  The moving company?  On the C?  It's a drop-bottom trailer.

"Essex"..... another - who the heck is that, but a great trailer anyway.  Never heard of them.  can't even find the company.

Anybody ever hear of anyone that has modeled those trailers or found decals?  Microscale doesn't have them unless I'm completely blind.  Looks like Walthers did "Clipper" in HO once.

By '72 I'm seeing a heavy percentage of Santa Fe old and new schemes, a good mix of NYC/PC vans including flexivans, and then a select few oddballs.  At the moment I'm most interested in the oddballs.

I've had the philosophy over the years that non-train people set the time period by looking at your vehicles, not your trains, so this stuff matters.  I have way too many 'too new' trailers, these look like fun, only mildly impossible.    Ideas?  I can even make my own decals if I could find decent color side shots or some HO source decals to imitate.

I can do dark lettering (non white) on a color laser or inkjet, but even finding decent shots of the trailers is a challenge.   I've also been known to buy HO decals if I can find those.   No luck either.

Yeah, the Neptune trailer is the moving company. That's their logo, for sure. Also surprised to see it on this train. Saw Clipper on the Super-C frequently in the early years, also occasionally (or later) on UP's VAN. Essex? I'm with you - not a clue.

You might be able to fudge Clipper with homebrew laser decals since there's no white. Those look to be standard fonts, too. Franklin Gothic Condensed comes to mind for the huge "CLIPPER", but I would have to verify that.

I'm sorta/kinda modeling the early- to mid-'70s Super-C and VAN. I say mid-'70s only because I have a bicentennial-scheme ATSF SD45-2 in the mix.

Font turned out to be plain ol' Helvetica Condensed Bold. How original. :|



It's not a precise match to the prototype pic, but damn close to the Athearn interpretation. It all depends on "whose Helvetica" they used. The prototype has a font with a lower x-height. I'd really have to dig into my old (pre-computer!) font catalogs to find something closer.

Hey, I found the HO Clipper set.   It's testimony that you have to find it on eBay and that the search function on Micro-Scale's on catalog doesn't show it is there..... or discontinued, or something.  Even if you know the stock number!

87-347 .... and the rest is my own magic.  And yeah, if that isn't the right font, dead on, you'd win a bet on me.   OK, one down.

Just in the nick of time.    OK, good job, forum!   I imagine I'll have to throw a coat of Microscale decal preserver on it, but it should work.

I even went back into the Micro-Scale page and there is no indication they ever made those.   Ever.   Now I can see if you would show them as now discontinued... but.... never???

Update:  WCFN100 has definitely solved the mystery of "Essex".... it's Essex Wire Corporation of Windsor, ONT.   Which makes sense to me because I'd read that ATSF was going after the expedited auto parts business to the west coast.   But wow. that's still a relatively rare trailer then.

I've been surprised MicroScale hasn't capitalized on recent N scale releases with new decal releases.  Trainworx trailers and the ER P-S 4427 are two opportunities I can think of where opportunities abound, what with all of the trailer possibilities and the TTLX lease schemes.

Here's one I have been looking for for years.... Caravan Trailer Rentals... common as a double double and a doughnut up here in Canada in the late 60's - early 80's yet I can't find a good shot to make artwork from.... this is all I can find...
