UPP 9336 "Tool Car"

Some time ago, I posted a thread about wanting to make a "tool car" for the UP Heritage fleet cars from KATO. Well here is my attempt at the project:







My real concern was how to match the KATO version of the UP grey and yellow colors. I used Tru-colr Harbor Mist Grey and then an acrylic "Apple Barrel" brand called King's Gold. It was way too yellow, so I slowly added an orange color to it to finally get what you see. The car was molded in a very dark blue color so I primed the entire car with the Harbor Mist Grey, which I had added some white to, in order to get the lighter shade of grey. I think I got real close to the KATO shades, at least the car does not stand out like a sore thumb. I found yellow to be tough to work with.

I have not added couplers as yet and am not too fond of the trucks, so they may get replaced. The "old" Microscale stripes I applied were a real b**ch to apply.

Any and all suggestions are welcome , criticism also.

that is a ConCor , 60', double plug door car, w/o roof walk. The ladders only go up about 1/2 way on car. I can not remember but I think it is a model of an Evans built car.

They do not show in the pictures but I did put doors into each end of the car.

Thanks for all the comments. Here is the final version, as of today, anyway. I got the TruColor paints , grey and Yellow, mixed and blended with some orange and white well enough to very closely match the KATO shades. She should look good added to my Heritage fleet. I am not very happy with the Microscale stripes because they were old and had to be sealed or learn how to put many little pieces together on the car. I think I shall take a new razor blade and cut out the decal along the sides of the ladders and on the doorway detail. That way the stripe will appear to be behind the ladder and I can probably get it to lie down better. I hope.









This was a "roundtoit" project that gave me much enjoyment.  Isn't that what railroading is all about?  Thanks for looking.

I made a video yesterday with it running in the consist as well as my KATO SD-70ace. That is the way I saw the train in November 2011 at Santa Teresa, New Mexico. The "toolcar" adds a lot, IMHO. I'll post the video later today.

What decal set did you use for the Lettering and herald?

The decals came from : www.CircusDecals.com. The name of the Company is : Circus City Decals & Graphics located in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Excellent decals but he does not have the red stripes on his sheet. Those I got  from Microscale. They have several UP diesel sets with red stripes.

Athearn has a PS 60' double door boxcar I have 2 of lying around. Looks very close though one ladder goes all the way to the roof, and if has one more rib on each side of the door. The trucks are nothing like those, however.

It looks like the Micro-Trains 60' Boxcar would be a good candidate with roof walk removed and ladders shortened.

Depends on if your'd get more hung up on the roof or the bottom sill...

The prototype cars (I believe) are a little shorter than standard boxcars so they are about the same height as the passenger cars. I am a UP modeller and I lay the strips very slowly around raised areas being careful using a toothpick to push them down around everything and then use several decal setting solution applications to pull the decals down. I is a lot of work and you can easily break them. I have always liked these cars, but haven't found the right boxcar to suit me. Nice job, I like exact models, but sometimes it is better to have a nice model for your train even if it has a few compromises. That makes the hobby a lot more fun and much less stressful.
