Athearn Challenger and Life-Like 0-8-0: Same motor

Maybe some of you folks already knew this, but I never did.
I had a Challenger motor out today, and noticed.

The only difference is the flywheels.  Just more useless information to fill up your brain!
(Actually, if your 0-8-0 motor ever fails, this would be handy to know, because you can
get these motors from Athearn.  I don't know how Walthers is on stocking parts
like this).

Good info Max!
I've seen that motor in yet another model. It's been a while though - maybe it was Atlas MP15?

Naw... MP15 had that little Mashima can. This may have been in the F45? It does look familiar.

The other thing about this motor is that you may recall I tested the dickens out of it
trying to find other motors that would do better than this in the 0-8-0, and except for adding a gearhead,
I really could not beat this thing.  It starts and runs reliably at well below 2v (around 1.7, actually).

Despite its 3 poles, it is smooth and powerful, and quite compact.

Could be - my memory is a bit fuzzy.

Way back when I took this pic thinking the 0-8-0 and Model Power steamers shared motors:

Max,

Could you please post the L, W, H of that motor as well as the shaft diameter?

Many thanks,

yeah I know that motor.
It is close enough to the same as what is found in the more recent
Rivarossi steam to make no difference.

I am not fond of it.

one word of warning about it.
DO NOT attempt to solder to the brush barrel when it is installed.
it melts in some way that means it will not hold position.
the brush barrel will pop out.

I have had a few visit for repair of that problem.

I have had a few people tell me "that never happens to me"
my statement that they were lucky is ignored...

A b-mann spectrum armature will fit in place of that three pole.
should you ever toast one... or feel the need to slow your loco a bit.

Which Model Power?  The 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 locos have motors with small solder tabs on the plastic end (and there they also have tiny MASHIMA lettering on that plastic end).

I have been told it is a mashima motor.

I have never seen what I would call proof.
like the mashima name stamped in it.

sometimes I'd read a description with
features a mashima motor and that motor would be in the photo.

the motor I call a kato motor is in many Atlas locos,
there is no manufacturer's name on it,
I do not know who makes them.

Kato has their symbol on theirs.
so I do assume Kato makes them.

Here is my Model Power 4-4-0 motor. It clearly shows that it is MASHIMA.  While I don't know whether it is true, I was told that Kato makes their own motors.  I was also under the impression that there are very few sources for small motors used by other N scale manufacturers.

Sorry took that photo about 6-7 years ago, probably their 2-8-2.

definitely a different motor from the athern and walthers.
which was all I was refering.
As of right now I know of three companies that use the motor
I was stating is unlabeled; Rivarossi, Athern and walthers.

...these are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard
there may be many others but they haven't be discovard...

If you need to be convinced of this motor's merits:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcMYWWEGh9w

Watch at about 1:40, nearer the end of the video.  You will see what this 3-pole could do in the 0-8-0.

As for the motor's dimensions:

W: 10mm
H: 15mm
L: 19mm
Shaft diameter 1.5mm
Shaft length (dual shafts, same length on each end):  3.5mm

Thanks Max! I am cursed because the cogging is more apparent with the 3 pole motor. Oh well, I'm the guy that walks into a sports bar, and instantly sees that all 100 screens have the wrong aspect ratio ...

It annoys me, but not enough to want to swap out the motor in my 0-8-0.
