Problems with our new GMD-1

Hello friends:

We've had some issues with the N scale GMD-1 and I want to call attention
to them for those of you who have bought them.  More info will be coming
in Jason's newsletter next week.

1. For DC users, the headlights on the silent models are not coming on.
They were supposed to! We've sent an email to Digitrax to ask if that is
something that can be easily fixed by reprogramming with a DCC system. We
should know by the time the newsletter goes out.

2. For NAR, the factory wired the silent models the way we normally model
NAR - backwards. This is causing a problem for DC users as well, as the
engines run in the reverse direction from normal.

3. Also for NAR, two of the engines have the wrong style of stacks and all
of them are missing the nose logo.  After Chinese New Year we will be
getting new stacks from the factory as well as nose logo decals.  There is
no need to get in touch with us now.  Let us know when I announce that we
have them in stock so we can send them out to you then.

Most of the problems we've heard have been from DC users. We had intended
for these to work in DC flawlessly, and Jason included his usual jibe at
DC model railroaders in our instructions. Unfortunately because they
haven't worked flawlessly in DC that jibe has come back to haunt us!
People really think we don't like DC users. I assure you that's not the
case. I use DC and I was with Jason when he wrote the joke at the end of
the instructions. He assures me he will continue to make fun of DC - some
people never learn!

Because most of the problems affect DC users, the way to cure them is to
remove the decoder and hard-wire the model. This is easy to do if you are
handy with wiring. If not, we are offering this service for free for
anyone who wants - we will remove the DCC decoders from your GMD-1
locomotives. You'll need to contact us at the usual address to arrange to
send the locomotives back to us. Alternatively, if you bought the GMD-1 at
your local dealer, they may be willing to remove your decoder for you if
you let them keep the decoder!  ;)

Jason will tell more about the hurdles we've had to overcome with this
project in the newsletter. In the meantime if you have any questions
please don't hesitate to email us.

I'm very sorry that these problems have come about. The N scale GMD-1 was my pet project until I was forced to take sick leave in early November. I know first hand that having a new locomotive you've waited for not work correctly is disappointing but hope that these isolated issues won't completely detract from an otherwise unique and seemingly well received model.

More information on this situation will be included in our next newsletter, expected mid next week.

Sincerely;

Mike McGrattan

Don't forget to get me an idler axle for my NAR unit, Pud... the B - A-1-A arrangement has my track foreman spazzing about axle loadings

I am telling ya all, just offer a DC version only and allow us to upgrade it on our own.  Than offer a DCC version with all the bells and whistles!

Puddy,

I'm sorry to hear that you have had some issues with the release of your new GMD-1.  But, from the sound of it, you're jumping in to take care of the problems and make it right.  In the long run, people will remember that, and you could end up gaining customers and more sales in the long run.  Can you make everyone happy?  Never.  Some people just cannot be pleased.  Don't let it get to you and be proud of what y'all have produced.

[offtopic]Now, to perhaps offer a compliment to Rapido and cheer you up a little.  This week, I bought my first Rapido passenger car, a Duplex Sleeper from the Panorama Line:

Perhaps the Phase I Amtrak scheme is not perfect for my mid-80s era, but it isn't exactly wrong, either (Ed's Law!).  This is a wonderful model, and it is helping me begin the amassing of an Amtrak Silver Star trainset.  So, feel free to produce some Amtrak Phase III schemes on appropriate cars, and, while you're at it, please consider bringing those beautiful Seaboard Coast Line (SCL) passenger cars to N scale that you have already done in HO.  I could also easily make use of them, too, despite the anachronism.   ;)  [/offtopic]

Thanks,
DFF

I really like my Sergeant Stripe model. Very heavy on the hand. I have not had the opportunity to run it yet. Looking forward to seeing it squeezed between two Conrail C40-8s.

I hope Rapido will take care of shipping back to them at their expense. $130 or so for a loco I have to repair right out of the box? :(

Regarding the headlight issue in DC mode — someone posted on Facebook that they put the engine on a DCC track and turned the headlights on.  The headlights then work properly (with directional lighting) in DC mode.

I think the overwhelming majority are pleased that Rapido has gotten out in front of this thing and addressed it before most people even realized there was an issue.

Don't know of any N scalers around here in W. Conn. I've asked at hobby shops and train show in New Milford. Certainly no DCC access for me.
Wanted to adjust some dual mode Bmann locos too. Not to be.

Yes, I DO applaud Rapido for stepping up right away, before most folks got their locos. Reminds on the MP loco issue, with bad drawbar wires. Whole lot was recalled.

I have no experience with DCC, so this question is asked from pure ignorance.

Is there a really cheap DCC system, suitable for programming dual-mode decoders, that would be affordable enough to use as a dedicated "tweaking station" for a DC layout?  Or are even the basic control units too expensive to be practical for that?

Very good question. I'd be in for something like that, and as you said, not too pricey.

The simplest standalone unit is http://www.broadway-limited.com/1020-Address-Changer.aspx . 80 bucks (maybe available at a discounted price).  But it looks like it can only read and change addresses (I haven't looked at the user's manual or detailed specs).

But then for not much more there is the NCE PowerCab http://blwnscale.com/nce-starter.htm. A full-feature DCC system contained in a throttle unit. $140.  It is also expandable. I have this one and I love it.

Then there might be some of those USB adapters which will work with JMRI installed on your PC. Those might cost less than the BLI address changer unit.  But then you have to supply the PC and JMRI.
