Adventures in Weathering

In hopes of actually contributing and producing internet content instead of just consuming it, I will be documenting my journey in to weathering.

For starters, here is a G22b from Traincat with NZT DB4 containers.

Painted the containers zinc chromate. I gave a lighter coat to some for variation.
Used oil based water soluble Windsor & Newton Ivory Black and Burnt Sienna as a wash. Wash was applied with a flat brush thinned with water.

Very light spray of rust colored paint. This ended up being too light. I will use darker colors next time. Car got the same wash.

This gon got a slightly thicker spray of rust and the washes.

After the wash dried, I cleaned up a little bit with water and a brush. Mostly looking to eliminate obvious water spots.

Close up of the car after cleanup.

Before cleanup.

After:

I added concrete streaks on the car and containers. Streaked with concrete and aged concrete paint. Mostly drybrushed. I speckeled some gray powders on top to simulated overspill and dust.
The paint looked "too new" so I needed to tone it down with powders.

After:

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
I need to paint trucks, wheels, and couplers. Oh yeah, and other half of the car.
I play to use some black primer on the wheels with roof brown on the trucks. I will paint the journal boxes with some oil ivory black.

What I've learned:
This may sound like a contrived plug for Tom's book, but seriously...buy it. It's great to reference. These water based oil paints are game changers. You won't have to mess with stuff like Turpenoid. You thin with water. You wash with water. It looks oily. It has a long working time, too. Throw your acrylics away and buy them. ;)

Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

Thanks!
I should add this is my first time using these techniques. If I can do it, anyone can with a light hand.

Shouldn't you have installed it upside down then?

In all seriousness, great work.

Artist's Loft White Synthetic Brushes. Bought from Michael's. I used one of the flat ones.

Did more washes on the second car.
Basically just more wash. I put some rust spots on there, too. I dotted with a tooth pick, let it dry a moment, and dragged brush down.

A picture a friend posted showed these containers being much dirtier than I had. I put more cement streaks on there. I even tried to be subtle on one of them.
I got the idea to dry brush another layer of a slightly different color concrete over it for some depth. I have not done that yet.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated. I'm doing this thread seeking opinions and to hope others will get something out of this and take the airbrush to theirs cars.

Next steps:
Still waiting on paint to come in for the trucks. I'm going to do more streaking of the yellower concrete on the containers.

I'm more of a Mountain Dew guy. Lol.
I can't remember who you are. You're local, I presume?

I like the layering using different techniques for depth..... Makes it look better than just the normal 1 pass weathering I am used to doing

Are you doing CK or SK? The SK seems to be a more brown paint.
