Multi-dome cars have multiple separate, smaller quantity tanks (versus the cars overall capacity).  Seeing one on a siding implies a customer is receiving a small shipment (from one of the multiple tanks and sending the rest on to another customer elsewhere) or receiving shipments of different products in one car.  Does heating oil come in multiple grades that the latter would be the case?

No, I wish I knew. I do know that by 1950, Texaco cars were part of General American (GATX) fleet, although they apparently kept their TCX reporting marks for some time. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Mark and Otto:  Thank you!  So they did have 10K tanks in the silver scheme after all.

Carl:  Thank you for the UTLX link.  Now I know what the underframes on those ancient tank cars looked like.  Plans for the narrow gauge versions are easy to find.  The standard gauge are much harder.  I also always wondered why some of the narrow gauge cars had frames and some didn't.   

As for how long TCX reporting marks lasted, there was at least one black car still running in the late 60s.  One of my books has a partial picture of it in the Seattle area, but I have no idea which book it's in.  I noticed it a few months back, thought "good, I don't have to worry about THAT model", and promptly forgot it again!  Here's a "modern" beercan car with TCX initials in 1969:

David — 10k, which is the Bachmann model, but not 11k as is the MTL car. The billboard lettering on the Bachmann version is too small, unfortunately. And note the build dates. Most likely the scheme was not present in New England of the 1950s.

Attached is a early 1950s photo of a texico dealer in Burlington VT... Hard to make out the reporting marks but the cars are definetly not silver :) [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Bryan:  Probably not, but 10K is closer to the MTL car than 8K, so it isn't quite as obvious a difference.  As for the silver paint, I doubt that it was in use anywhere by the late 50s, or there would be more pictures.  GATX probably repainted everything black for consistency, to save money, and because a dirty black tank looks a lot better than a dirty silver one.

It looks to me like Otto's picture of 7892 has K brakes, so it certainly isn't a recent photo.  If so, it shouldn't be later than the early 50s.

Most likely it is way earlier than the early 1950s.  Probably two decades earlier.

If it makes any difference, I model 1950. So 1949 is more appropriate than 1953...

Good question.  I have one, and after looking at it again, I declared it an "Historic Model" and put it away.  It didn't look like a candidate for improvement, but was too interesting to get rid of.

Actually, there was a recent article in one of the two N magazines on upgrading the Arnold tank that brings them up to current standards. It was in 2014, but I don't remember which magazine. I'm thinking it was NSR.
