Yes. All six PMs were going, and working hard uphill into Cheyenne. I was working hard, too - it was a gravel road and I had certainly pegged the "reckless" meter taking this shot while driving.

But it was a priceless moment, for sure. This shot still elicits goosebumps.

I remember we were on the other side of the tracks,and were much closer to the train. The noise was deafening, and we were all impressed that Mom was willing to race at 70+ to catch up and keep up...she was great that way...

As another aside, when I got back into N scale,now some 20 years ago, my first experience with the "new" N scale was a Like-Like E8; just couldn't believe how smooth it ran and how quiet it was. I remember my brother stopping by, and even he commented on it. It's come a long way, for sure.

The COLA engines from Kato are E9's.

     E-9's , Please us the correct dash between letter and number, had the newer style Farr Air stainless steel side grilling like on F-9's. The Sand Box fill covers had square corners not rounded like on the E-8. Union Pacific's first order for E-9's looked a lot like E-8's and had two front headlights, the larger group of E-9's some using trade in trucks from pre war E Units had single headlights and an E9 plaque below the cab windows on both sides on A Units. Most Burlington EMD locomotives  had these model ID plaques, but not UP. The Sand Box Fill Covers were interchangeable despite different corners and due to shopping wrong model covers could sometimes be found on units. That pacing shot sure brings back memories of several rides over Sherman on UP Domeliner's. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake, Utah.

Where do you get that from?  There's plenty of examples for "E8" (and other units) without the dash even on EMD literature like the operation manual.

Was the E9 special with the dash?

E9's were catalog passenger locomotive so no they were not special.

I'm just open to the idea that the E9 was different for some reason.  I don't know that I've seen anything from EMD with the dash.  I do know that sometimes that these (E8s) units were written as EA8.  Not officially maybe, but on stuff like paint diagrams from EMD.

Seems to have gotten way course from the original question of "do KATO steamers and E8 diesels run together well?" Certainly somebody has used a Mikado or GS-4 they've done this with......

It has been awhile but I do not recall my Kato PA's running very well with my GS-4.

  Trains Magazine for years used a dash between letters and numbers on early EMD Cab units, IE: E-6, F-7, but not FT as there was no number, same for switchers like NW2 no dash. I agree that EMD did not use a dash and some models when mentioned in Trains and MR omitted the dash like SD7. It was not a consistent thing and second generation locos like GP35 etc. I never saw with a dash between the letters and numbers. The old Railroad magazine also did this. Nate Goodman (Nato).

The only ones I remember seeing consistently use the dash were the EMD -2 series, and there it was part of the name. 

The book "NP Diesel Era" from Golden West Books has reproductions of the original NP diesel locomotive profile sheets, describing all of the features and characteristics of each type, and they ALL have a dash between the letters and numbers. 

On the other hand, it appears that the GN, and later the BN, didn't use the dash.  The MILW didn't use builder classes at all, preferring to make up their own class.  So maybe it was a railroad specific usage, rather than an official manufacturer designation, and others picked it up from whatever railroad they associated with the most?

the original question?....Does the new K-a-t-o F-E-F-3 run, in D-C, with the K-a-t-o E-9-mechanism...?
No.....as beautifully as the E8/9s DO run, with their 'frictionless' trucks...the new FEF-3 starts to creep at a much lower voltage...and runs more efficiently. I finally remembered this thread and put a number of E units on the rails together with the new Kato steamer.
They just don't match up....DCC will be the only way to consist these to run beautifully together...
