A work-in-progress shot but the elements are pretty good. The final layout (not mine) was awesome; I wish I'd taken lots of shots of it.

Alright... they all get included. But Bill's goes on the cover.

(Great work, everyone.)

Didn't Bill's shot appear in Model Railroader? A recreation of a real-world photo?

Or did I read about that here?

Or is this another pesky acid flashback?

I've been using magazine photos of the Kingsbury branch to prove the point for years, and now along comes Bill Denton with something better than that.

Does it burn real diesel fuel, or do you need to use a lighter grade in N scale?

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

I've always liked this shot Bill.

This photo was in N Scale Railroading a few years back if I remember correctly (along with the prototype photo next to it).

Blows my mind  :)

The sad part about this is there are still people that think the only viable scale is HO.There is a hobbyshop owner here in Grand Rapids that is that way,and he can not understand why the other shops are doing so well and he is just barely surviving.

Myself I am partial to all scales because they are all modeling my favorite things like trains. :D

Nate

A similar photo was in Great Model Railroads. This is one of the rejects from that photo shoot. I took many before I was satisfied with everything and all seemed to pretty much match up with the photo in The HIAWATHA STORY. I used Helicon Focus to get the depth of field. The E9 was photoshopped to get the "blur of speed" effect. The sign was printed out on my home printer but after the photo was taken I noticed it should have two bullet holes. I considered adding them to the sign and reshooting the scene but it was much easier to add them in with photoshop along with the rust streaks.

Teaser alert :I have what I consider a better photo inspired from The 400 STORY but it has not been published yet.  :P

Sadly some people are set in their way and there is no swaying them. However, the Modutrak group found the best way to get other model railroaders to notice N scale is to get the layout up to eye-level. People tend to wander over to get a look since the layout stands taller than most and they don't have to bend over. Getting the models up into their faces let them see the details. Most are surprised by the fine running mechanisms N scale now has as compared to 30 years ago when they last looked at an N layout. We often hear nice compliments about our layout but the best part is when we they add: "and I'm an HO (or even O) scaler."

All the photos here are worthy.

I had a similar conversation with the guy that owns the O scale shop locally.  He was selling off all N and the affordable HO inventory (he still has half a wall of dusty Marklin HO and Z that I have yet to see move) a few years back and I asked why.  He said that it wasn't worth the shelf space or the headache of stocking "all those different couplers."  I shook my head and paid for the Kato passenger cars at 60% off and left.  I've been back a couple times, since he's right next to the hospital/dialysis clinic, and over time he's added a couple HO B-man train sets and some DCC in the far corner, but really added a whole display of RC planes with all the assoc small parts.  Not enough room for couplers but plenty of space for gears, bellcranks, and pushrods.
Can't model worth a darn, but can research like an SOB.

Most of the the photos in this thread, I would suggest, do not look like N Scale.   You can tell that they
are model trains (well, except possibly that black and white of the 100 mph diesel... holy cow...)
but it's pretty hard to peg them as N Scale.

So here's my entry for your list, and this just happens to be one of my recent ones you've all already seen.
I like this one because I've gotten feedback from non N Scale folks that it doesn't look like N Scale.

I agree with Dave, Victor, and others, that it is wasted stress trying to convince anyone that N Scale is
"worthy".  If people cannot be convinced by photos and models, let them be.  They are not worth the
wasted breath.

But assembling some photos and showing models to people is still a good idea because not everyone
is that stubborn.  I have come across people who see what N Scale is now who they are surprised.  But
rather  than putting their hands over their ears and insisting it's not possible, they are ready to embrace
the future.  So for them, doing good work, advertising it, and showing what N Scale can do is a very worthwhile
exercise.

I'm late to the party due to computer issues.  Bill's photo wins hands down but I thought I would still add my favorite as an also ran.  The morning haze is incense and the sky is obviously photoshopped.

Best regards,

Roger
