Jeez, I need to start paying more attention. I assumed that the Kato would do what I needed it to do, which is allow me to convert it to a Cabbage with little fanfare. Now I need to go look at Phase to see if that was an incorrect assumption. So, for me I would definitely buy it if they could pull of some Cabbage tooling as well. I also need an F40PH in Phase IV paint, but not sure which Phase it is either.

F40s were painted in the Phase IV (large blue stripe with two smaller red stripes above it). Believe by that time many of them were turned into Cabbages though. This is a good reference: http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/locoshots.html
The link above to the Rapido master class is precise for figuring out the phase of an F40 PH.But here is a quick and easy way.Air tanks up front- phase 1 for sure.Fuel tank up front, flat radiator fans- phase 2Fuel tank up front, round sunken Q fans- phase 3.So in that photo above, looks like a phase 3 which Kato could do if they wanted. That paint scheme looks good on it.
You can also "cheat" and figure out the phase of an Amtrak F40PH by its road number:Phase I (Nos. 200-229) featured 1500-gallon fuel tanks mounted just in front of the rear truck.Phase II (Nos. 230-328) had larger (1800 gallons) fuel tanks mounted just behind the front truck.Phase III (Nos. 329-400) were similar to Phase II F40PHs, but had EMD's Q-style (quiet) radiator fans. Hope this helps,DFFP.S. I've never seen those angular fuel tanks on an F40PH before. They must be a replacement for some reason.
Yep... In fact, your chart shows which manufacturer has the "wrong" road number.
In fact, some of Amtrak’s F40PHs were occasionally leased by freight railroads when they were short on power.
It has been a long time ago, but I remember seeing a shot of an F40PH that....... if I remember correctly,....... was having its nose chopped and a front walkway platform created in that spot. But I would have no idea where to find a shot like that now.
