I think they're both interesting plans.  The "spaghetti bowl" would be fun to see being built because I don't think I've seen a layout with that much track in such a small space.

The single oval plan is well laid out except I don't care for not having a passing siding/run-around track on the yard side of the layout.

you are in luck  .  As I said, I based it on someone else's plan: (though theirs is a 3x8)

I just flipped the direction of the climb, simplified the yard, and added industries.

Peco Code 55 is actually just code 80 with ties modeled over some of the rail; if you don't mind shimming the ties it will work just fine

Here's a few revisions to ScrewySqrl's yard. Hope combining a few things makes sense. Put the caboose track in the yard to make it easier to add/ take off cabooses. Made 3 sidings by combining dark/light blue mains w/ Xover. Changed engine house switch from LH to RH which put fuel/sand/etc on house lead.

the car float brings in sugar, and chocolate comes in from the interchange

this looks pretty nice in terms of density, but I don't see any runaround tracks (besides the big purple industrial spur combined with the green track "up north")  You should have at least one in there, especially because you have both facing and trailing point spurs.

a change to put everything working off the runaround, more storage on the cat float (6 cars instead of 4).  some road sketches, and a river since we have a harbor.  sketched i some rough road ideas too.

If this is a "game" layout then best to organize it into sections so as to save space yet keep the complexity. If the point is bringing a through train into the yard then breaking it up and delivering it to the industries, bringing back the returns, then sending them in an outbound train, a very practical plan would be thus:



The industries are compactly set in one area with a runaround, the yard in another (put in your own yard runaround, engine facilities, caboose track as you see fit), and they are separated by a short run of line. There's space for a interchange and a car float wherever you want them, and all the rest of the space can be filled with the city and waterways. The industrial area has enough complexity to be interesting to switch, and the yard can be expanded with more track, a freight house, intermodal facility, whatever.

Change the Xover on left end of siding to LH off mainline vs Xover going into spur. Changing that will make switching that area alot easier. Also are there going to be switches at the 2 boxes on left side of bottom spur?

Meant to do that plan just didn't scroll down far enough to see your "completed" MR. You did most of things I recommended. Now that your yard tracks are long enough you could put 2 2' staging trays on one.

Purple should be the main. Why would you want to run trains through all those S curves and diverging routes on the switches, thats asking for problems.

On this plan would make the top yard track a siding. It would be alot easier to make up your trains in the yard rather than the little siding on top of the layouut.
