Seems "anonymous" would only be a bad thing in a one-on-one interaction.   Fact is, if ONE person gives you a negative, who cares.   I think the value of this is when FORTY people give you a negative.   Anonymous or not, that tells you you're being a jerk.    Because, believe me there are people that never truly think they are.

And as time goes on, I think it will eliminate a lot of problems.   If someone is being a jerk and they are negative 1800, you can just write them off and ignore them.  If they're in the positive, I think one would be inclined to (a) consider the opposing viewpoint and (b) have a more positive interaction with that person when discussing their differences.

It also can reflect, ummm, legit-ness.    Like the person who suggested I use nail polish remover to take paint off, then finding out that it universally destroys just about any type of plastic used in model railroading.  (that wasn't on this forum btw, and thankfully it was a old school $5 Atlas hopper, but still.)

Having said all that, I really don't care one way or another, and it probably wouldn't matter if I did.

What if the same person repeatedly keeps on giving the rating (positive or negative)? Is that fair?  Yeah I know, we are discussing something we don't even know how it works yet.

A non-acetone nail polish remover would have probably done the trick without melting the styrene body.   It is all in the details.

Indeed!   Yes the suggestion was actually for acetone, and nail polish remover was just suggested as an easy way to get hold of acetone.   I was pretty suspicious of the suggestion anyway and it wasn't a big deal, but if someone else came along that wasn't just testing it out like I was....I could see them ruining a $50 loco shell pretty quickly.   

Your point about one person repeating negatives through all of your posts is valid I guess.   But at that point you have a pretty good case for getting the mods to step in.   I wouldn't see a legit reason for doing that other than retribution.   Probably some way to throttle that might be useful.   As in, you can only give 5 feedbacks per hour or something....to keep someone from "going postal".

Maybe they thought it was a brass loco?    Or they were just clueless givers of ill-advice.

I was (hypothetically again) thinking of someone slowly giving those feedbacks.  Maybe one per day, or one every few days. Or even less often.  In time that number will add up.  People holding grudges can be very persistent and creative.   If the feedback is not anonymous, this can't happen (unless the person holding a grudge set up bunch of user accounts and gives the feedback using all of them).

meh...

Some (nearly, all, actually) people regularly give thoughtful advice, some people are a bit prickly (often the same people as post good advice!), some people don't give advice at all, and the ratings don't really reflect much of this.   What they do seem to reflect is the frequency at which people post.  People who post more often seem to have higher divergence from a zero 0 rating.  Usually positive.  I don't see very large negative ratings at all (which is almost certainly a Good Thing).
