What to Do With Hundreds of Bettendorf Trucks? (No Couplers)
« on: September 26, 2014, 02:13:13 PM »

I have literally hundreds of Atlas, Intermountain, and MDC bettendorf trucks which I've cut the couplers off of.

I was wondering if I could use them as gondola loads (15 trucks fit in a Micro-Trains 50' gondola), perhaps on their way to be recycled in 1971, the year I'm going to model some day.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmm... try selling 'em
again... Hahahahaha....

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

short of setting cars on them....

they become scrap metal in the real world,
so that is about all that can be easily done with a pile.

has anyone ever built a darling little planter out of one?

a few pallets can be stacked as supplies for a car repair building
I've seen something like that near the subway car repair depot.

sell them?

I tried selling the bettendorf trucks I have, with no luck.

 :)
  kiz,
if used for Scrap loads cut off the sideframe and drill out the Bolster and Springs,
should look good if all are kept on the detail side.
if trying to sell,do small quanities,5 or 10 Pair, and keep them all from the same company.
this may be trouble with Atlas as they have had several different AAR/Bettendorfs over the years.

I actually have them sorted out by company and version. I even found some Red Caboose bettendorfs I had stashed away. I admit it... I'm a pack rat.

Hmm... noooooo...

"I am now shipping model rail road cars, less cars!"

"Space Trucks! these spiffy devices can carry large loads in space"

"extra small HOn3 trucks!"

"order 10 pair and we'll include an extra 20 pairs Free!"

"extra Awesome Sauce free!"

you get the idea...

Hmmmm
those fifty five beet racks are calling for trucks. They are set up for body mounts and poor rolling is quite like the real ones...

There were still a lot of cars on the BN in Washington with "Bettendorfs" in the early 70s.  Many had roller bearing adapters in them, but they still looked the same, unless you noticed that the journal box lids were missing.

And, oddly, I have a picture of GATX 1984, a beercan tank car very similar to the Atlas car, taken in 1985, which still has "Bettendorfs" with the lids on.  I found a builders photo of GATX 1987 here:
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/gatx/gatx1984abb.jpg
and it has the same trucks, so you might want to save these.  In 1971 they're still usable.

Has anybody ever considered making Bettendorfs with roller bearing adaptors sticking out the journal box (in N scale, I mean)? Or is there some way to convert a set to look like an upgraded one?
