Just saw the announcement.  I talked to a KATO rep at the N Scale Convention in Roanoke.  He said that it was going to be all new tooling.  Not based on the Daylight.  It appears to be DCC friendly.  Not sure about DCC Sound friendly.  Looks like a great set.

Long overdue. Should have been the first passenger train they did.

Are the water bottles strictly modern day excursion or would you have seen something similar in passenger service?

:|    Union Pacific 4-8-4 steam locomotives never used water tenders in regular service. The excursion tenders are conversions of former large fuel tenders from the last series (two unit) gas turbine locomotives. The first of these conversions was for many years painted black to match the then numbered 8444. Since then the WB's have been painted yellow to match the cars and much modified over how they looked when first converted.                     Nate Goodman (Nato).

My wallet is safe. I would have preferred the Empire Builder. Alas!

I assume they are doing it because they have most of the passenger car tooling.

It says it IS DCC friendly, and I think there's an DCC option. Not sure it if's a KOBO, but it's for preorder.

Its good then that Kato is offering just the engine with its orginal tender as stand alone. Granted its one road #.

I know this excursion set is out of my era . Even the loco and tender if done right will have details that are out of my era . This is intended for display in different cabinet drawer than my era correct UP stuff  :? :x :RUEffinKiddingMe:

Kato says it is semi modern so you can run excursion or historical trains.

I'm excited, happy,  and kinda disappointed. Only thing I wish they would have done was UPP 9336 (the express boxcar). Glad that the 5 cars I've collected are not part of the 7 car set, but wish there had been more than 7 as well.

Oh well, the water tenders alone are fantastic.

I really wish they would have done Howard Fogg and Reed Jackson.

Attempting to model a modern Southern Pacific based in 2015/2016...

Also, I have a passenger train addiction...
