I think Tom's effect is nice -- but not as 'rust texture'.

I agree. I have seen railcars painted with a similar textured coating which (I believe) is some kind of insulation.

Most modern railcars are sprayed with primer and weather-resistant paint that literally has to be worn off in order for rust to start the deterioration process. To put a rough base down in order to cover with paint would be modeling a finish in which the paint was applied in a matter that allowed moisture to directly effect the metal. A very unlikely scenario.

FWIW, I took this video today and paid extra attention to the the rusted covered hoppers.

There wasn't any discernible texture to the rusted areas.

Here is the hopper with a little more sanding and the start of the top coat (white, in the case for SOO)

and from far away:

Those hoppers looks great! Have you ever considered Gary Raymond wheels to replace those wide tread wheels?

Yes, I contacted him but never heard back.  I would love a set.

How close to proto are the wheels/track/couplers for 1:29?   (Is it like P:48 where you have to scour and scratch for almost everything?  :D  )

Even worse.  The track is 45mm gauge, correct for 1:32.  Wheels are 33 and 36 diameter, at least.  I'm using 1:22.5 couplers, since 1:32 looked too small.  Everything is wacky in this world.  The sheer size makes up for it, since you view trains at the same size you do in real life.

So if my math is right, that scales to a 51.4 inch gauge.   Sort of ironic, that as the scales get larger, the proto accuracy falls off.

There is something viscerally satisfying about the 'heft' of the larger scales.  How well do the 1:29 locos (diesels) run at low speeds?  And how about the sound?

The diesel I have (USA Trains GP38-2) can creep along.  I don't have sound, but the fuel tank was designed for a 2 1/2" speaker.

Sorry for the late reply, but as I was looking for some things on NWSL's catalog I noticed they have entire selection now of machined wheelsets including P:32 sets!

I'll have to head on over to Caboosie one of these days soon and see what these buggers look like in-person.

I'll post some photos of mine (with me provocatively posing with it like a 60's Ridgid tool calendar).
