Picked up another Atlas/Kato RS11, this one much better than the MEC. Gave it a good cleaning, and tune up. Runs like a champ!
I appreciate all aspects of this hobby, but I think it's the motive power that really gets it for me, especially if you can make a turd run better
than when you got it.

Ah yes, the A/K RS-11 in D&H colors. I have 3 and are some of my favorites. Nice to look at and they run really well...

I needed a grain elevator for my small layout I'm building and decided to use the Prototype at Reed Point, Montana as my inspiration.  I used a Walthers kit as a starting point and changed a few things.  The most dramatic feature of the elevator is the ghost sign on the front and back.  Underneath the Occident image is a "Billings Best" sign.  Michael Livingston was kind enough to make decals for me using an older photograph of the prototype.

Hello all...last update for the weekend...done as much as I'm going to get done until middle of the week...put a few bushes in, and drybrushed the foam 'rocks'...
still a lot more to do, especially with the talus and vertical rock face (many painted sedimentary layers with predominant red colors)...
but, as you can tell, the last 7 hours of work has produced an amazing amount of change...
still to do...
paint the skyboard with lighter shades of blue, then background scenery
talus field
Red rock faces and sedimentary layers
ballast

then, a little tweaking and we're on our way to Round Rock/Austin!
Thanks for looking!

It's similar to a project that I need to get finished up.

What???  No ALCO trucks???

Played around with basic grass and low shrub cover on the test section this week.

While the grass looks good those RS18-Cats look great!!!

Very nice ghost sign, and excellent overall weathered siding!

Went to Depot Days in Cheyenne, WY.  Did the shop tour and saw the 4014, 3985 and 844 in various states of repair or maintenance.

The E units were on display, and Amtrak had their display train.

Welcome to the Union Central and Northern narrow gauge upstairs in the Cheyenne Union Depot. I took these shots
during DEPOT DAYS. More coming!

Andrew, I never would have guessed that started as the Walthers kit, very nice build and execution; the decal and colors really make it unique

I repaired a couple sections of benchwork that had mold or mildew spots on them. First was the L-girder for the helix base:

Of note, I didn't use any glue, instead making pocket holes using my Kreg Jig and clamping one end and then screwing the pocket hole screws in from the other end. I also used it to reattach front pieces of the grid benchwork that I had taken off for the same reason. With the pocket holes:

Front-frame reattached with pocket hole screws:

It was real easy doing this with the jig. I have some other sections that need to be reworked and I think I'm going to use this method on them as well. I also put up 3 pieces of backdrop,

With that benchwork there it will be tough to get the beer out.  Just saying!

That looks like Harry Bunks HOn3 layout.

Yes it sure does! I used to love following his "Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge" series, truly an inspiration! There are guys that are great modelers, there are guys that are great historians, layout designers and concept thinkers, and there are guys that can tell a story. Harry Brunk was all of the above and much more. Even though I don't model narrow gauge (although I do love it) I can't think of anyone who has had a more profound impact on my approach to the hobby than Harry, and I am thrilled to see his work preserved in a well funded and permanent museum exhibit. Does anyone have the story behind the story???
Thanks, Otto K.

Okay, I googled Harry Brunk and found he's alive and well. He sold  his incredible 65' x 12' layout to a Mr. Steele who donated all of it to the Cheyenne Depot Museum where it's been reconstructed and improved, with Mr. Brunk doing some beautiful backdrop work. Now that's the way to plan to leave a life's work behind....
I have to make a poit to go see it in person!

Is this where (IIRC) they used to have a sort-of-museum of miscellaneous old-timey baggage room stuff? If so, it's a much better use of the space!  :D
