Weekend Update 5/4/14

i spent several hours on Friday night and Saturday afternoon down in Salt Lake City taking photos of 4014 both for art and for superdetailing my Athearn Big Boys.  I'll be following this train up the Wasatch Grade on Tuesday!  FUN!!





I thought it was interesting that the lead engine was the present-day 4014, and the pusher engine was the 4884.  UP put some thought into this move.

Also thought that this would make a really interesting train to run.  That's one reason I'm documenting it thoroughly.

My son Sam and I got the rest of the lumber we need to finish the benchwork for our portable layout and will be working on it today. At work this week I will be manning the fort alone for a few days as Jason and Dan will be at the VIA Toronto Mtce. Center getting 6917 running again for the first time since the mid 2000's... I really hope that LRC will smoke and sing - just like and Alco equipped locomotive should !

But to model this train, you'd need to remove the lagging....

Decals applied to the first car for my PROVINCIAL MUSEUM train - this is power car CHEAKAMUS RIVER:




I picked up a Prairie Shadows bulkhead flatcar to see if the ladders could be modified without ruining the model - pried the side ladders away from the body with a #11 blade until I could get the photo etch shears in for the cut.  Some minor paint remediation will be required prior to weathering but this is now a more accurate car for BCR:




These cars are nicely done and look great with the custom lumber loads from my friend Dave Mac Kinnon (Details N Scale):




I also purchased a CN car as Keith Hansen's NAR book illustrates one being pulled out of the Northwest Wood Preservers mill at Dawson Creek.  Here is my car at my temporary rendition of the mill:




Back to PWRS on Saturday for the other five BCIT numbers, and I will need some more loads . . . . .

Otto.  Yup.  Without thinking about it too much, I'd probably use a ConCor Big Boy (I think I have one somewhere), file off all the surface details from the cab to the smokebox (except the domes), file in "relief" around the dome borders blending with the rest of the boiler surface and making the edges much more pronounced, then add rivet details using Micro Mark and Archer 3D rivet sheets, do a quick casting of the retractable step surface details and add all of them (they're the most obvious "sticking out" feature...then piping and brackets. 

It'd be a bit of work...and then, there's the rest of the train...two modern engines to detail and paint, and the cars.  It'd take about 6 months, but it'd look great at next year's Ogden Hostler Show running up my Echo Canyon! Totally out of my era...

I should be doing my tax return, but the first big hike of the season and some bridge work were my priorities.

I finally got up the courage to start bending the walkway etches, securing the track and ballasting the deck of the approach bridge.  I used CA to secure the ballast, which worked pretty well, except any stray grains are a pain to remove

An update post...    Very happy with my attempt to model gravel roads and parking areas with damp spots.   Dark grey tile grout blended in with the base coats works really well.

Inspired by something like this....



I ended up here this afternoon.... 







A couple of puddles would be nice... may try that next.

I spent my weekend chasing this:



Norfolk Southern was running employee appreciation specials between Elkhart, IN and Bryan OH. They did 2 round trips, one Saturday, one today, and Nickle Plate Road 765 did the honors of pulling the train.
