Those building have lots of character. I like it!  You might also look at offerings from Pola, Vollmer, Noch and few other European manufacturers for some cool brick and maybe even stone structures.

I've always been partial to the Dr. Hotballs offerings.

Sylvan also has a stone house that may be usable as is, or as kitbash fodder for this project. http://www.sylvanscalemodels.com/NScaleStructures.htm
Because why not...

Actually, I think SD Mouldings is the company I got the house from.  Hey, @VonRyan, check these out:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=station&_sac=1&_sop=16&_osacat=19119&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xs+d+mouldings.TRS0&_nkw=s+d+mouldings&_sacat=19119

I dig 'em.

A bit big for use on Killeshandra, but I could certainly see some of those being on another, larger, layout if I decide to build one.

Found a short wheelbase Märklin chassis in amongs my piles of stuff on my studio table. The wheelbase is a bit longer than the wheelbase of the Peco N6.5 wagons, but it looked ok when I held a van body on it, so I went ahead and mated the two together. Looks pretty good I think. I'll have to go back and make my own brake-lever details later on, but for now it looks ok to me.

I also went ahead and bought a Tamiya rattle can of "Royal Light Grey" and painted the van body. I just need to mask off everything but the roof and the metalwork parts of the body and do those in either black (which I have) or a darker grey (which I would need to buy) but I'm not sure which.

I'll take a couple photos of the current state of the van tomorrow once I peel the masking tape off the chassis.

Sounds exciting... Do you have a prototype photo you're working off of?

Perhaps you could use a similar technique to the one Tom used on his IHB NW2, building up layers of weathering until you have the dark grey/black you want.

i like it - and the grey is light enough you won't need to do much weathering for your time period.

I decided to paint just the roof, and I choose black, since the place near me that sells Tamiya rattle cans was closed by the time I left work.

And I tipped the van on its' side so that I could get a good photograph of the Märklin chassis.

Now I just need to put couplings on it and my locomotive so that I can run more than just a light engine around the layout.

Sweet. Will that chassis work under the Peco gondolas as well?

Yup. The Peco open wagons are the same wheelbase. I just need to find out what kind(s) of rolling stock this chassis comes under. Then I can start fighting people for them on eBay.

I also found some non-Märklin Z-Scale wheelsets that I didn't know I had. Going to try using the tophat bearings in the Peco sideframes again with these other wheelsets.

Also, I have something for you:

Mark Fielder mentions these on his site. I have a third somewhere. I just have to find it.
They don't look at home in Ireland. But they'll look at home on your various layouts.

The first actual train made a couple laps around the layout only moments ago. My 0-6-0 saddle tank and the box van traversed the layout without issue.

A photo to commemorate the occasion:

And for the curious, here is a close-up of the couplings:

Etched brass hooks scavenged from some GWR coach kits, and some tiny long-link chain which I can't remember who it was made by.

Do the chain couplings ever give you a slinky effect?  Just curious.

Kinda sorta. It's hardly noticeable. Pretty much just a faint jiggling in the links.
But it's actually all quite prototypical with loose-coupled wagons.
