I've done a little thread housekeeping per your request.

I'm very interested to see updates when you can work on the layout again.

By the way, I've found over the years a good technique for simulation stone with thick white mortar once you're ready to do structures (Ireland = stone buildings, right?).  Start with the off-white mortar color first and then dry-brush on the varying stone colors, being careful to stay out of the mortar lines.  To me this looks more realistic than trying to add a white wash into the lines later.  To wit:

Oh damn, that's the stone building you were talking about.

That does look good once done up.

Thanks, and from what little I've seen of traditional Irish architecture, this technique should work well for @VonRyan...although he'll probably need to add more moss!

For reference, here's the front of the house.  It's a single casting of a UK prototype, so perfect for Cody.  The downside...I picked it up at a train show 14 years ago and I can't remember the manufacturer's name.

Now you've got me thinking of redoing the scenery in another corner...

I've always liked this photo of an abandoned little cottage somewhere in Ireland:

Hmm. That makes lots of sense.

I bet mine came from the same guy at the Timonium show who has all of the Kestrel stuff.

The atmosphere of that first picture is spectacular!

and the rustic and settled nature of that cabin would translate well to a cast N scale model...

edit:

Although a paper model would also be a possibility.

Kestrel!  That sounds about right.

Cody, go check out Kestrel.  Find some good UK-style architecture...I promise it'll really "pop" your layout!

A model house including a thatched roof would be the bomb.

Agreed!  Looks like all that's necessary is to cover whatever roof the kit comes with in a nice thick coat of ground foam!

I've some Kestrel stuff lying around. Nothing stone, but plenty of brick. I'll have to see what deals can be had on the UK eBay. I'll just have to count on using different Windows. I have a Kestrel station kit and the widows are quite thick.

Those building have lots of character. I like it!  You might also look at offerings from Pola, Vollmer, Noch and few other European manufacturers for some cool brick and maybe even stone structures.

I'm not sure it's a Kestrel building. I think it's more "sold where Kestrel stuff is sold".
