this is one reason to do an article - how to achieve this in a small space.

Or handlaying Nn3 track in a small space.

Or why this prototype - which is unusual in the US - in a small space . . . .

I thought @Chris333 laid the track...   :?

same track plan . . . not sure @Chris333 laid the track . . . but that would make an even better story about 2 modelers combining skills on a single micro-layout.

Pretty sure that Chris sold Cody the layout.

Not saying that's bad, just that if you want the track laying piece it'd have to come from Chris.

@Chris333 did indeed lay the trackage.

Killashandra is actually the first incarnation of Chris' "Carbon Limestone Co." which quickly became superseded by a larger version.

Chris did all the hard stuff. I'm doing the easy part.

wow 3 mentions in a row.  :)

I don't care about taking credit, but yeah maybe not an article on the track  ;)

Interestingly enough while I don't know much about Irish narrow gauge, it is fun watching this get built up. He didn't get the backdrop because that would have been a big box. I like it better now without the backdrop. And it looks like the layout gets to see the public, where here it would just be part of the "stack" in the basement.

You can start here and click the right arrow 30 times for an article on the trackwork:

The funny thing is, I had originally wanted the backdrop, but when it got here, I didn't feel like making a new one, which meant a nice sized hill in the center. I'm glad I was too lazy to make a simple backdrop.

It was always my intention to get the layout out and about where the public would be able to see it.
I like the fact that I get asked the question "this is Z scale, right?" and then having to explain that it's N-scale narrow gauge.

If it wasn't for this layout, I probably wouldn't be doing any serious Nn3 modeling. Plus, this layout has gotten me to do some actual modeling for a change, and for once I've taken on a project that I actually have a good chance of finishing.

When I went into the Pepsi Co. building on Sunday morning and saw my layout sitting there on the folding table with all the greenery on it (and the glue being dry) it was as if I was looking at someone else's layout.
Even still, despite all the scenery work and such that I have put into the layout, I have a hard time calling it "my layout". To me it is still Chris' layout that I have been given the opportunity to finish.

But that's mainly because handlaying track is such a daunting task to me.

So the layout has received the ultimate compliment.

A member over on NGRM-Online said "Hard to believe this isn't a larger scale!"

Well it's hard for me to believe that the layout could look that way.

Well, once the riverbed and dirt road is done, I'll start taking some good photos and put an article together for submission.

Cody,

Can you post those Irish prototype pictures (from your phone) that had scenes with the vibrant green pastures, dirt roads & the grey stone walls? As per our earlier conversation in Danville, VA I'd like to try building some short sections of the stone walls using matte board & some Woodland Scenics grey fine talus. Could really use some cardboard templates or marked up overhead photos (from your layout) that show the hillside elevations or roadsides (with dimensions) on where you want to add those stone walls.

Also have some smaller tree branches from JTT that might be a great starting point as armatures for Irish trees. Will post photos of the items mentioned once I get further along.

Regards,

All the photos to date have been so close up, I really had no idea how small the layout really was.  Great work- I'll echo Chris that some dry brushing will bring out highlights.  Even the most uniform vegetation has shadows and variations in green.

"That's all she wrote."

My little Märklin 0-6-0 bit the dust today. I tried every trick I've learned and nothing will get it going.
I had gotten it for an incredible deal of only $50 second hand from a Z-scale modeler, which is an insane price. And it is highly unlikely that I'll ever find another 5-pole 0-6-0 for the same price ever again.

I have no clue what possibly could have gone wrong to where it would stop working all of a sudden. And it even was working fine just yesterday.

Now that it's dead, the layout is now just a scenic diorama.

Oh well  :(

Can you confirm she's getting power (i.e., the layout wiring isn't to blame)?

Yes. The layout was getting power. And both the rails and the wheels were clean.

They make 5 pole replacement motors to upgrade these.

It is a 5-pole version. I also don't have the ability to replace the motor.

Well, if it truly is dead, you have nothing to lose by letting me tinker with it next weekend at the 4-H show. I managed to revive a three-pole version, among other things, so I cannot see the problem with letting me take a whack at it. I want to see it turned into an Irish prototype, so I have some motivation!
