Looking for a 3D artist?

So I have something drawn in 2D:

I need it converted to a 3D drawing I can send to Shapeways. I did draw some parts .005" thick so that will need to be changed to around .012".

Any takers?  I'll pay for your time  :)

I can do that tonight if you'd like.  I need a break from the rivet detail I'm currently working on.

You got a drawing with dimensions?

So here's where we ended up last night.

I ordered a set but need to get some wheels.  If for some reason anyone wants some, just search Shapeways for Nn3 Hopper.

Trouble on the ranch.

Quote
Here is why we cannot print your model:

The minimum thickness for free wires > 0.8mm (if not bearing weight) and > 1.0 if bearing weight (like a sprue) in this material. Please thicken the wires of the model.

Anyone been down this road that can give some advice?

The sprues between the models can easily be changed.  The little handle thingy not so much.  I'll change the drawing to .8mm and see what they look like but that's over double the current size, we may need another solution.  The easiest would be to just make them holes and do the rest with styrene.

Chris?

I would see if the handle brackets will render, and leave the handles off. Maybe dimple the sides of the brackets to assist drilling for wire.

I think sometimes it's just not practical to render 100% of everything.

I guess the wording is a bit curious to me.  They emphasize the word 'wire'.  I'm wondering if the model maybe failed just because it's a rod shape vs. if I drew it as a teardrop or oval or something.  Or maybe I could add a support half way that could be removed.

It's not that I'm trying to render everything, just seeing if I can learn something new.

Hi Jason

The word "wire" in shapeways is a bit loose, a wire can be rectangular / square or whatever.

Basically you need to beef up the areas where they have highlighted to the materials specification, get ready because this can get frustrating especially when trying to push the boundaries. It also depends on the Shapeways operator to interpret what is a wall and what is a wire, you may beef up all the parts shown and resend and then get another rejection in a totally different area. Supported and unsupported wire are also down to the operators interpretation.

I have only once managed  to apply some reasoning and they did reluctantly print my model, which printed fine, but advised me to beef up the area they shown.

A lot comes down to trial and error and learning curve as to what Shapeways will print.

Yeah I just got an e-mail that my order could not be processed.  :|

Jason, You can leave the handle completely off if that will work, I can live without it. If they are just talking about the pin that goes through the 2 brackets, you could just leave that out, whatever is easier.

Well here's a couple options.

Just holes for a .015" rod.

Or a fatter (.8mm) handle that's a little more offset from the body.

Or anything you want to see what it looks like. Just let me know.

Out of those 2 options I like the holes best.

Okay.

I'm going to try and make someone look at it this time before hand.

edit: Do keep in mind that handle is only .031" in diameter.  Sometimes that gets lost looking at the 3D model.

I wonder if .012" square rod would have worked? Not that it matters, but it would be nice to know just what Shapeways wants.

I put in an order with the holes and a modified sprue, we'll see what happens.  If it goes through I'll put them back up for sale publicly and post back here.

Slightly off topic. I was searching "Flag Coal" today and found this:
http://www.haveenginewilltravel.com/engines/flagg-coal-company-75
Shows it once working at a quarry with similar dump cars.

So I searched the quarry and found this:
http://www.railcitymuseum.com/RAIL_CITY_v_12_02_2012/The_Solvay_Process_Company.html
Show 2 of the dump car bodies on a flatbed and calls the "Koppel quarry cars"

The Koppel plant was in Koppel, PA and also served by the P&LE who served the quarry I'm modeling with these cars. So it fits.
