Gitchi-Gumi Railroad

Welcome to the fictional railroad called Gitchi-Gumi Gichi-Gami Railroad which is a co-operative of all railroads on Lake Superior.

The plan is to have a layout around the walls with one peninsula. Right now I have just one wall for the layout because this room is also a kind of guest room.

My idea is to combine interesting trackage to build up a complete layout which will be more of the type to running trains than operating them.
There is e.g. Munising Junction in the UP of Michigan which I would like to build. The problem is there are so many interesting junctions that I haven't made up my mind yet which one will make it into the plan.

Due to the lack of a proper plan you'll find a panorama photo via the link below. The crossing is based on Pembine, WI although the station building is of course not.
This part is 330 cm long and 60 cm wide and is the 'small town part' of the layout.
The pink and purple parts are temporary and will change once I have the whole room.

The room itself is about 360 by 370 cm.
The mentioned peninsula will be the place for an ore dock. I have a copy of the original plan of the LS&I ore dock in Marquette, MI. The model will only be about half the length of the ore dock. A colleague and I are working on a 3D model and the plan is to print it in sections.
Because of the ore dock's size I'm afraid that I don't have the space for a big yard.

Once I'm almost sure what the layout will consist of I will try to make a plan of the whole thing.

I'm trying to depict a fall scenery but don't expect breath taking scenery because I'm not very good at landscaping but I think I can lay some track good enough that trains won't hit the ground...  :D
Did I mention that I hate ballasting?

I'm using a mixture of Kato Unitrack and Peco code 55.

That's all for now.

But that GS4 is from the SP, not the UP.

The big lake they call "Gitchi-Gumi" (Lake Superior) catchy  :D I've often thought about doing the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, of course I'd focus on the LS&I after they purchased the U30C and C30-7's from the BN. Keep us posted on the progress of that LS&I ore dock.

Haven't done anything for a long time...

The last thing I did was throwing some grass on the ground...

Nothing new on the dock though.

So, finally I have a plan although it is only hand-drawn but I think you'll get the idea.

The upper part is what's already there, the rest is fiction and has to wait until I have the whole room.
The plan is to have a small ore car loading facility at the right hand side.
The center of the room will be the location for the ore dock and the yard at the bottom of the plan.
On the left hand side will be not much, maybe just a river which the tracks will cross and the rest just landscape.

The plan is at 1:10 scale and I hope everything will fit.

So what do you think?

Unfortunately all of my images from above are gone because the webspace is gone.

There is a bit of development and I will post some photos soon, so stay tuned.

It's been a long time....

Back in October 19 I started changing the room so that it is now possible that the layout can go around the wall.
The focus is on the layout so that I can run trains again.

Fast forward to today: it's done. The last gap is closed and the track has power. Some last few tweaks and the first train is ready to go.

I will be posting some photos soon.

Let the fun begin...

The layout plan changed a little bit: One of the changes is the addition of a lower level which will be reached by a nolix.

Yep, at only $70 for a LNWI.  And you can get four connections.
