SP Whaleback tender in N scale ?

If you have an Oriental Lmtd. SP 2-8-0, that's a "whaleback" tender behind that C-9. AFAIK, there was not a "sausage" tender made in N scale. It would have been 7000 gal. tender and behind an "S" class 0-6-0 switcher. As for the Mikado, that would usually be a 120-C class "Vanderbilt".

The B-mann mechanism would be a nice conversion. You would have to address the cylinders, since they are different than those found on the Harriman 2-8-0s. That said, I know someone who could probably cast those as well...

Thanks for the clarification. Now that the curiosity function has been engaged, I did a Google search and was able to spot the difference between whaleback and sausage tenders. That's what I like about this forum, you learn something new every day.

For a laugh, look up "SP sausage tender" in Google, then choose Images.

A piece of tubing, some trucks and some walkways is all there is to that tender. It would not be a hard scratchbuild at all.

It looks like there are two major versions, one that is a round tank with the bottom cut off and one that is more like the coil car hood. Both have a uniform diameter tank so nothing hard to do there. The round tank would be easier to do. The tank with flat sides could be done with a brass tube opened up or styrene tube with a thin wrap over it that extends straight down. Get the shape right, add Archer rivets, walk ways, handrails and then it is down to the underframe.

For the underframe, an easy stand in would be to use a tank car frame or you could scratch build your own without too much work.

Yes. Just another casting I need to buy from him (even though I haven't finished the other two engines that I have castings from him for). I'm trying to pretend that the AC-9 doesn't exist right now.

When I go to swap meets and train shows, I ask the table vendors if they have any "boxes of junk" they want to part with.  I usually do it after buying something of value so they can see my intention. More often than not, I spring for the box, as I have found countless treasures either assembled or not over the years in these boxes.

Four years ago, I bought a rather large box of N scale "junk" the vendor was discarding for a few dollars.  Inside was a whaleback tender, the one we are talking about undecorated, metal, with conventional freight car trucks, and I would have to adapt it to a completely operational loco with pickup on both sides.  There was no electrical pickup, and I didn't want to disturb the integrity of the exterior prying the top off.

I came up with some old Model Railroaders depicting some SP 0-6-0's in HO in brass on a rear cover with whaleback tenders.  I purchased a Minitrix 0-6-0 without a tender on "the Bay' and now weathering it to match the tender and to develop a strong drawbar connection close enough to make it look like a viable SP branch loco. 

In all of my years, I have never seen an N scale model of this tender either in person or in ad copy, and do not know the manufacturer.  I do not post photos on boards, but will do so by Friday on my facebook page which everyone can access.  That I know how to do. All I need is a little time to do it.   Note the Floridaboy handle is NOT in my Facebook name if you are searching.

I heard of , but never saw a Western Railcraft Kit for a SP tender.

It would be so welcome to have a different boiler to use on the Bachmann Consol.  While I know that there is one available from Shapeways to do a Western Maryland 2-8-0 (a real beast with tractive efforts matching some Mikados) having another option would be great since such would fit well within my freelanced lines' operations.  I hope this will go well... I could be in line for a couple, depending on how much they cost.

I push this post back as last Friday I've received one of the Atlas 50 000 000 Series 42' Steel Coil Car ( as suggested by Big_Train) and start to convert it to Whaleback tender for an SP Cons.
Later tonigth I will put some pics if somebody like.
I've used the base of the original Bachmann tender, shorting the Coil car top to fit on the base. Adding one "foundation" to the top with a piece of H styrene rod and shorting the metal wheigth to provide good contact on rails and at same time an heat sink for the decoder (it will be a Soundtraxx 750)

- any progress on the Consolidation boiler cast? Is possible to have one or two pieces for me? If "yes" .. how?
