Remember that export locomotive dropped from a crane?

It was around last November:

Well, I have pretty good idea what happened to it:

Photos taken about an hour ago. Train was our BNSF local, apparently (...uh, obviously...) on their way to the interchange with the Evansville Western, who will handle the final, 9-mile leg for delivery to National Railway Equipment in Mt. Vernon, IL. We were over at the GC&W layout building working on things, heard the horn, poked my head out the back door... and the next thing Robyn knows I'm running madly down the alley to catch it at the 5th St. crossing.

Nice catch, Mike!

Interesting that it's going to NRE. One wonders if they plan to repair it? Seems stupid to ship it halfway around the world to be parted out and scrapped...

No, they'll part it out. NRE is mostly a breaker yard, anyway. Frame and prime mover are toast from the drop.

Actually, a key part of their business is repatriating locomotives for scrapping. The yard is littered with an amazing amount of stuff they shipped back from South America and Africa.

Interesting they're going back to NRE when EMD built the GT46AC (not GT46C-ACe, that's an Australian EMD...).
