I checked my photo of PRR 113751, and it definitely had a roofwalk / running board when photographed in 1989.  I remember a photo of a DRGW boxcar photographed in MRing that had a roofwalk in the late 80's, so these types of exceptions were out there.  Thanks.

I saw a GTW 60' boxcar in the late 90's still in original brown complete with roofwalk. Anything is possible it seems.

For me, 2 CR, a PC, and that LV car.

Roofwalks lasted well beyond the 1978 cutoff.  Maybe they weren't supposed to, but a lot of cars didn't lose them until they received a full repaint or major repairs.  Train crews knew to stay off the roof, so it really didn't make any difference.

Out west, some of the 40 ft boxcars kept theirs until they were retired in the 80s.  These cars were used for grain, and if the elevator received a mix of boxcars and covered hoppers it was handy to be able to cross the boxcar rather than climb up and down.  The train crews didn't use the roofwalk, but the elevator workers did.

Thank you for the CB&Q cars.  I'm one of those who suggested them years ago, and I'll be ordering a complete set.

Do the CB&Q cars have roofwalks? Or they the "modernized" with roofwalk removed.  Also these are high brakewheel cars too, correct?  My 2 minutes of searching all shows short ladders with low brake wheels.
Just curious, probably grab one, if not both.

On every ESM X58 model, the arrangement of the brakewheel, roofwalk, underframe and ladders is accurate to the specific prototype and era represented.

One CB&Q car is as-built from the factory.  The second is a few years later and has an ACI label applied.  Both schemes, along with the arrangement of the hardware, are accurate to their specific prototypes.

On the current schedule, the low-brakewheel variation of the X58 will debut in 2015.  BN is scheduled to be represented in that release.

CB&Q cars:  According to the Morning Sun Books "Color Guide", page 53, 23300-23499 were built in 1967 (23319 in August of 67), and came without roofwalks.  I found a couple of mid-70s pictures online, showing the roofs, and neither had any evidence of roofwalk supports or their removal.

Oops!  Don't know how that got overlooked, particularly when the photos we have clearly show that.

The two pilot models used for approval are painted/printed already and utilize the as-built body, so the first pics of the product will show the incorrect body with roofwalk.  However, the change order has been made for the production run — the CB&Q cars will be the first appearance of the modernized body, with no roofwalk and low brakewheel.  This will not affect the final price of the cars in this run, as it occurred before the bodies were molded.

And waiting until 2015 for BNs, and Conrail too right?  Start saving pennies I guess.

The latest will be 2015 for the BNs and other modernized-body schemes.  But since this current run now utilizes all three body variations simultaneously without costing a premium, some modernized-body schemes may appear in Release 4 next year.  But BN is the "anchor scheme" for Release 5, so that's where it will be.  It's possible Release 5 could be moved up based on sales for Releases 3 and 4, but currently it's slated for the second half of 2015.

Are you planning any full Conrail schemes with service dates of 1980 and earlier?  Perhaps a full height can opener?
