Passenger and freight action at the tiny community of Hawk Junction, Ontario:

Hawk Junction was once the Algoma Central Railway's division point, but today is all but abandoned, served only by thrice-weekly trains.

... Loram railgrinder at night. Something I've always wanted to capture:
http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=10519

The Loram grinder trains have been a near-constant in my railfanning over the past decade. It just seems when we set aside the time to chase trains - even major cross-country trips - a grinder train is bogarting operations. Not that we completely mind, as you are right, at night they are a great show.

We got a chuckle on one such occasion... grinder train passed, and set a bit of lineside brush on fire. It was starting to get out of hand after about five minutes, so we were momentarily wondering whether to grab the cell and call the fire department, knowing that we were in a rural area and probably dealing with a volunteer dept., etc., likely 10-15 minutes before they would show. Just about the time I was pressing "send", a hi-rail truck cruising behind the train with a big tank of water pulled up and dealt with it. Good thing they did, as it was on the edge of a small woods and was on the verge of getting messy.

I was sitting on Newtonville Road a little before sunset that day and the water truck passed by on the road. I wasn't paying much attention to it until the words 'Fire Protection' on the side of it caught my eye. Being in the fire protection industry, and not seeing any Gov't markings, I was wondering what someone in our line needed that big a truck for. Later, when they were preparing to start grinding, I heard them call 'water truck' on the radio, and it clicked. They kept the water truck about one mile behind the grinder to catch the flare-ups, and there were a few, but never saw open flames so thay did a good job.

The following day, however, there was a smoldering tie east of where I broke off the chase at 2330hrs, that a VIA crew dumped six water bottles on to no avail. Must have been an older tie. Probably needs to be replaced now

Your Hawk Junction material is also very nice to see. I have not been there in a while. I've always been curious about the Michipicoten branch as I pass over it on the way to White River. I've tried to get to the harbor but missed it by a few miles. Thanks for your pictures!

that's amazing.  Not only is he resculpting the ballast profile, but he doesn't loose anything behind it, and it hops the grade crossing without derailing.  Wich our N Scale cars  could do that.
