Nothing wrong with wood, as long as the grain runs the right way.

My point, exactly.
My response was to Lee saying "He models with Styrene."
I scratch build with Styrene, however I really enjoy building laser kits from a variety of manufacturers and some orient the sheet correctly and some don't.

Obviously this comment isn't relevant because the layout is so far along but idly wondering why the coal yard trestle didn't run all the way back to the switch off the main. Why the expensive (as far as the company who had to pay for building it) fill and block retaining wall instead of cheaper wood bents? Of course, if this is an artistic choice, no need to answer. (Sorry, the cost estimating part of my civil engineering persona is asking).

Because I thought tank cars would look better off the trestle even though they sometimes parked up on it.

And I already have a much larger coal trestle on my bigger layout:

David's Decals came in the mail today and went on without incident. Thank You! and Pete for offering.

Over in this corner I want to put the Walther's water tower. I wonder if I should paint the whole base a concrete color or just the feet and dirt in the rest?

They just (within the last decade or so) replaced the water tower in my old home town. Here's an under-construction view from Bing:

It looks like the practice, for both old and new towers, was to have concrete piers with grass between the piers.

My pleasure. Now I'm wondering if I should have printed them in dark grey to simulate fading--they look so darned clean and crisp!

My vote is for dirt and a little weeds under the water tower and around the four footings.

The new decals and their application on the fuel tanks look much better.

DKS' tank decals came out really well (but I had no doubts that they would).  They do look dark, but they could have been freshly repainted.  :)

Not unusual. In Pennington, NJ, where I lived for a few years, there was a coal trestle that had a stone retaining wall (although admittedly not very tall). The trestle was later raised up a few feet and the stone wall was extended with cinderblock. It's difficult to make out from these photos owing to the fact that a structure was built alongside the wall.

Finalized the coal yard. For the office I first tried this little cube from GClaser

Then I majorly cut down a Walther's office kit. http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3822 I cut it up so much that it no longer looked very good.

So next I though about cutting down a Walthers State Line Farm Supply and using only one bay, but this time I had a cardboard mock-up.

Then I gave up on cutting kits and came up with this in my head.

Was about to run with that last one, then I found this pic.

The only concrete block walls I could find were 1/8" thick laser cut wood. So I made it in brick.

Once I parked a truck under it the building looked a little bit tall so I chopped 5 rows of brick off. Still have to shingle the roof.

And I cut up and moved around the fuel truck platform

There isn't much room here so this makes it look less crowded I think. Was going to strip the Sinclair truck, but I found a Sinclair dealer the next town west from me on the Erie mainline in Ravenna, OH

Chris, that's a great sequence on the progression of the coal trestle scene. Some people don't realize the amount of trial and error that goes into any one scene, especially the small ones. It reminds me of this sequence on my James River Branch--coincidentally a coal trestle scene.

Chris,
I agree with David - we often don't get to see "the mind at work" so its interesting to see where you started and ended up.

And about this pic:

Where did you get the pump under the tanks and the stair on the left side?  I have need of similar items . . . .

They are from NJ International:

http://www.blwnscale.com/nj-international.htm

Pretty sure the kit with the 4 tanks also has a pump, but no stairs.
