Dave, I must agree with you. The water is a bit too blue.

Nevertheless, the layout is really cool.

DKS made an awsome job making this layout fit into my size.

I think I'll go with this...

Crayola Water...the only thing that kept it from being a really spectacular little layout IMHO.  Everything else really worked very well and Mark is despite his own criticisms, a very good modeler.

David, This is PECO or Atlas?

How can I get this in 1:1 printable version?

Thank you.

I really like this. Seems like the perfect home for lots of fun CR power depending on the era: GP15-1s, GP7s and 9s, a gaggle of Lifelike/Walthers switchers.

The only thing notably absent is the SW1500 and 1001s that would be really obvious choices.

The MP15, while nice looking, really spent most of their time up in hard coal country.

I recommend making one change.  On what would be the turnout near the log pond in Luis' posted plan, change that from a left-hand turnout to a right-hand turnout to get rid of an awkward s-curve.

Dave, I think this would make the runaround a little bigger, yes?

DKS, do you think it's possible?

The "awkward s-curve" was almost non-existent, and flipping the switch from left to right only made it worse. It was far easier to simply straighten the track that had the slight s-bend. I also added another industrial siding on the runaround, which can simply be omitted if not desired.

I had accidentally drawn the other plan using Atlas track; I have re-drawn it with Peco track. There are two curved switches. Minimum radius is 12".

DKS, the plan is looking great.Loved the adicional siding for another industry. Thanks.

That's one of the questions I have, and this can be strange for some of you...

What kind of industries can I have? I mean... Conrail used to serve and transport what? I have box cars, I am adding insullated box cars, hoppers... this just to have aome rolling stock to have fun with the track plan, but this doubt is haunting me... so... I am sorry for this if it seems dumb... I am also sorry for English, if it isn't that good some times.

DKS,

Actually, what you did with that turnout in this plan is exactly what I had in mind.  The "awkward S curve" is gone.  Sorry for not being able to explain it better, but you got it right.

Hi all.

I am going on a little break with the wife, so no trains for some days. I'll be back with more questions and updates on this projects.

With many thanks,
Luis.

Hi.

As you all know, I am building a small layout, wanting for the time to build this one, but reading a lot, and having a lot of thoughts about it.

Building this small layout made me realize how confortable it is to build small layouts, or... small modules or sections sitting on a chair, and working on my desk.

So I am thinking about going modular / shelf. After seeing again the INRAIL / L& IN RR on a free ezine, made me think.

What are your thoughts?

Are you thinking modular, or sectional? There is a difference. If you intend to take what you build to modular layout club and interface with those of others, then it's a modular system, whereby you follow a set of standards. If you just want to build a larger layout made up of smaller unique components that do not follow a standard, then it's sectional. The obvious advantage of modular is that your work can become part of a much larger whole; the disadvantage is that standards reduce the options you have for a track plan, and give each module something of a cookie-cutter look. With sectional, you have the ability to make a layout of almost any size and configuration that can be dismantled and moved if needed, or even taken to shows and displayed as a stand-alone layout.

Hi David.

Thanks, I understand the difference.

I know what you mean. The this is that here in Portugal there is no one making modular layouts, in N scale...

The main problem is... how will I keep things rolling (closed circuit) on a shelf???.... I think this wont be possible...

Luis,
So in American English, Tom has a Shelf Layout.  It may have been built in sections for installation, but it's not Modular (which would mean he takes it apart regularly and moves it).  I have been following Tom's thread at MRH as well, and he does fantastic work in HO.

In N scale, you can do the same, and his shelf widths (12 to 16 inches I think, or about 30 to 50 cm) give N scalers more room to work in.  You could do a really nice Conrail line on a 12 inch shelf, depending on what your room is shaped like.

P.S. No me recordo que su es de Espana o de Portugal.  Pero, si se queries escrite me in Espanol para obtener informacion, me gusto musho la oportunidad para dar le un poco de assistencia.  Hasta luego.

Hi Phillip.

I am portuguese, from Portugal.

Yeap, Tom has a really nice shelf layout, and the idea is to build a sectional way, but I still don't know if I can do it...

The room is rectangular, but the girlfriend is thinking that perhaps it is not a good idea. The house is not ours, it is a rental, so the holes in the walls... and I can't use wood legs, because we already have a bed there, and my workbench, and some cabinets.

Perhaps I will stay with the layout as it is, but try to negotiate a little more space....
