The M1 boiler is much larger than a K4 and is the reason why I'm going with the GHQ.  I'll have to work out the domes but the rest should be decent.  I need a cast pilot though....

Max's hippo used only one GHQ boiler.  He built the M1 with two Trix K4s, which is the example I followed.

Correct... and two old Atlas/Rivarossi 4-6-2 mechanisms cut up and spliced together (the Bachmann Mountains
did not exist when I made mine.... back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth).

Do all these cryptic remarks (to a noob), mean that a single Bachmann heavy mountain and a single GHQ boiler would be a good start for a mountain? And what would anyone suggest for a tender?
My reason for asking is after learning that the GHQ boiler is closer in size to a I1 then a L1. I'm planning on using some minitrix K4 shells for converting my Kato 2-8-2's. And was thinking about using the GHQ for an 2-10-0. But I'm not up to splicing steam chassis and was thinking using a Bachmann chassis for a 4-8-2 would be an easier bash.

I'd say, "Yes".  The GHQ boiler + a Bachmann mountain ought to do it.  But... you will have to
do some work on that boiler.  The M1 had a very long firebox, and you will have to stretch the GHQ
boiler to accomodate that.  The I1 and K4 had either 5 small drivers or 3 big drivers, but
the M1 has 4 "medium"  (i.e. 72") drivers, so it has a pretty long wheelbase and boiler.

I am planning on splicing two GHQ boilers together to get the right length firebox and cab over the bachmann chassis.  One is not enough.  I am also looking into using a laird style slide and cylinders from another loco.   The sand dome may be a challenge, and I knew about the new cast pilot.

I was not trying to be cryptic, just trying it pique interest.  It might be a while before I start.

Josh we are all cut deep going to just have to go to the US and beat upon his body. Then again that is an ugly thought.

 

Just waiting for my ConCor Kato S2 part bash to arrive to see where I go from there. Mind you I have two Kato Mikes to play with and two Bachmann light mountains as well. So whichever turns out the best will be the basis for my interim fleet.

Only wish that things would slow down a bit so I can get some time for my own Pennsy Modelling.

                   Too bad that seller wasn't a closet GN Fanzee. I have always wanted to convert one of my Con Cor or Con Cor/ Kato S2 locomotives into a GN P2 Mountain.The trailing truck he used is pretty close,  the GN 4-8-2 locos looked very similar to the S2 but with a cleaner look no air pumps on the smoke box and the pilot truck wheels showing , no side frames. Sure there are plumbing differences on the boilers if you really want to get rivet counterish. Even if the Broadway P.R.R. M1/M1a does release by now I just would not buy one on principal. I would buy one.  There's principles, sure...  But then there's the sight of an M1 with 210F75 tender racing across central PA with half a mile of hoppers.
