Built for the northern line to port of Churchill.  It is a line on bog and permafrost, so it is subject to load limits.  I think these were a bit of an experiment.

Mainline Modeler did an article on this car, I always like it though it has nothing to do with my immed. interests.
I think this was the only one.
It also appears in Best of Mainline Modeler Freight Cars V2

Yup. Don't want your RR sinking into the muck.

If it wasn't that the carbodies are 25% smaller than the standard covered hopper, it would be an interesting kitbash. Are any of these still in service?

I think this was the only one.

There was 399000 as well.  It wasn't identical but the same articulated hopper concept.

398000 is still out there! I took this picture in October 2012 in Winnipeg

CN 399000 is also still earning it's keep. See it every so often headed through Toronto towards Quebec and/or the Maritimes. Ironically, they run on the high iron, while the line they were built to serve, at least partially, is ruled by standard hoppers after CN's successor figured the line to Churchill wasn't as flimsy as CN had always claimed.
