Something to keep in mind for anyone contemplating a conversion to the welded side Marine Industries Ltd. version for CPR, PGE 2116-2125 or TH&B, I noticed last night while looking at the builders photographs that unlike the riveted NSC cars, they were delivered with roller bearing trucks.

For those interested in the history of the "slab side" covered hoppers, see "The Smooth Canadian" by Ken Goslett in the August 1986 Railroad Model Craftsman.  The article has numerous photographs, an HO scale drawing of the CN's 12-hatch version by Al Craig (of C-D-S [Craig Drafting Services] dry transfer fame), a roster of all 2700+ cars built (fails to separate the PGE cars into the NSC and MIL batches), and an interesting table of "Commodities suitable as lading for covered hoppers" from the November 1946 issue of Canadian Transportation.

There are a further 5 prototype photographs in the "RMC/Dremel Kitbashing Award" article by Ken Goslett and Eric Clegg in the September 1986 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.

Puddington,
What is the running period of these cars. They look just great in the raw and finished. Were they just confined to running in Canada or did the mak it into the eastern zone of the US.

50's into the late 80's and there were thousdands of them. They most likely made it to numerous US destinations; I have seen pictures of them in texas, Conn., maryland, Michigan, and the mid west. They hauled many different materials from grain to silica, limestone and other powders and sluries.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

They definitely dipped down into New England regularly, which is why I need a couple.

Puddington and Brian,

Thanks for that looks like I may be good for a pair to mix in with my Pennsy trains. Cannot say that I have seen them in any photos but being such as nice looking kit they would help break up my solid strings on Pennsy freight.

The decal sets for the PGE and BCR cars are now in stock at Central Hobbies.  I brought mine home today and hope to start decaling my cars next weekend.

During a visit to Squamish today I came across this car which now belongs to the WCRA collection.  I do not know how many of the six square hatch cars are still around but I thought it was worth a picture:

This one is for you, Pud!

I am a fair ways behind Pud, but cars #1-6 are back from the paint shop - two as delivered in CN Grey and four in PGE/BCOL Grey, and with gloss coat in preparation for decals:

Here is a sampling of the PGE/BCOL decal sets available from Central Hobbies, including the as delivered red lettering, the map logogram scheme, and the dogwood logogram scheme:

Car #7 is now at the paint shop and will follow along in due course.

I have finished applying decals to my fleet of seven slab side hopper cars - two in the original red stencil scheme, three in the map scheme, and two in the dogwood scheme.

Trucks, wheels and weathering are next.

I am very interested in seeing these 7 cars completed and running on your layout.  Very cool!
