Question about the February Micro Trains Sleeping Car

N Scale Supply (and other sources) has the new Feb 2013 MT releases including "Burlington Northern - 12-1 Heavyweight Sleeper Passenger Car."

Surely this is a mistake.  A heavyweight sleeper with Pullman lettering would not have made it into the 1970's (The merger was in March 1970).  Did they mean CB&Q or the even the Great Northern?

But why won't they do CSX passenger cars so that I can run nice long CSX passenger trains?   :ashat:

They probably meant CB&Q, but even with that they're confused because it was sold to the Q in 1948... in Pullman Green with metallic gold lettering, it's simply a Pullman owned car.

And the Poconoke was a Plan 2410a.  So it's not like they even picked a name that is correct for the model.

Jerry did all this research for them, and here are the Plan 3410/a cars that were also sold to the CB&Q but would be a better fit for the MTL carbody.

McKnight 3410A 25 May 62 Pullman green
McNab 3410A 19 Jun 62 Pullman green
McLeansboro 3410 5 Jun 61 Pullman green
Mackenzie 3410A 6 May 62 Pullman green
McQuesten 3410 27 Oct 59 Pullman green
McKinnell 3410A 14 May 62 Pullman green

But apparently no one has given this link to the art department:

The Pocomoke (plan 2410A 12-1, the MTL prototype is a plan 3410A 12-1 ) was built as a Pullman pool car 7/1913.  Whether it ever ran as such, on CB&Q unknown.  It was sold to CB&Q 12/1948 and was numbered 610 (not clear if it immediately lost its name).  It was renumberd 609 12/1950 and withdrawn from Pullman lease 2/1953.  CB&Q used as it and sisters as dormitory cars.  All presumably scrapped be early '60's.  The MTL paint scheme is an appropriate scheme for a Pullman pool car prior to 1948, but wrong for a CB&Q owned car after 1948.

It also wasn't equipped with A/C until a month after it was acquired by CB&Q.   CORRECTION -- A/C was installed in 1935 and upgraded in 1949.

Interesting list Mike. Anyone know the fascination with Scottish names in the Mc...... series?

Best wishes, Dave

Joe-

Maybe you can pass Jerry's research pages along to the people choosing schemes at MTL?

I really think there's a good prototype choice for any situation marketing is trying to do, in this case complete a "Burlington" set.

Those pages should help streamline the selection process and save you a bunch of time.

Joe and others at MTL know about the pages... whether they use them or not is up to them, but I am sure that Joe is doing his part in trying to get the right names (and numbers) used.  They were sent quite a bit of info on "Q" cars, including that they did not carry the "Burlington" roadname (on most cars just reporting marks and numbers) but I can understand their desire to also have a little more... it simply looks better.

"Interesting list Mike. Anyone know the fascination with Scottish names in the Mc...... series?"

Yah... George Pullman's wife!!!  Mrs. Pullman was the one who named a large number of the Pullman cars that were built, or so legend goes...

The inclusion of Mc names along with so many others was a reasonable one given all the variety of names that were used (some quite simple while others were quite exotic).  What is interesting is that they were spread across a lot of car types and not made a particular car series.  Speculation here... some of the names (Mc and others) could have even been names of employees...
