BTW, is the gon based on an actual prototype, or is it a 'composite' design? If there is a proto for it, who used them? Is it a match for either of these gons CP operates:
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp341810&o=cprail
and this one:
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp342828&o=cprail

This CN car looks the similar, but I get the feeling its not the same as the model:
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cn195755&o=cn

All of the above have a pressed T or hat-section rib, while the model has ribs made from Z-angles.

TH&B has NSC cars that look like the model (shape of the car, rib count and spacings):
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=thb2453&o=thb
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=thb2621&o=thb

Anyone shed some light on this car? I'm not much of a freight car guru, so I really can't tell what it is.

On this TH&B you can see the Z-angle ribs, but this has fixed ends, while the model is a drop-end version.

All of the above are variations on the same design.

This is the standard design for Canadian 52' gondolas. (Rib count and spacing, side sill profile.) This has a shallower sill profile and one less rib (and obviously a different spacing) than the US cars built by Greenville/Bethlehem that have been represented before.
The Canadian cars were built by NSC, Canadian Car & Foundry and Eastern Car Co.

There were fixed end cars and drop end cars. There were cars with two different styles of ribs; the earlier cars had ribs made from Z-shaped angle stock. Later cars had a more standard pressed rib. The model portrays the earlier drop-end car.

This looks like it.

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cp/cp340543sea.jpg

Yes, it is.

These cars were rostered by CN, CP and PGE/BCOL. All of the above plus THB also had similar cars with drop ends. Later cars (rostered by all of the above) as noted had a different rib style. A lot of the old CN and CP cars were rebuilt into woodchip cars and other services. Algoma Central's cars were similar (with the later pressed ribs) but had an inside height that was 6" greater (they just had to be different - although I found some identical cars in CN's roster listing).

A few more examples with the features matching the model above (drop ends, angle ribs):

Mid-late 1950s car with pressed ribs for comparison:

I'll add Jeff Briggs' NSC Box Car to the list... to the impressive list!

Now we just have to convince someone to make us a GMD-1 and were set!!!

What NSC boxcar are you referring to?

MBE made a GMD-1 kit. It requires a lot of work, including modifying a Tomytec chassis, but it should yield a decent model when complete.

Oh yeah, that one. Jeff does nice work, might have to grab one at some point, but Prairie Shadows may bankrupt me before I have the chance!

This year just got real expensive.

MSRP on Prairie Shadows rolling stock is also going to be the street price since it is exclusive to them. When I saw the pricing for the PSC van when first introduced I felt that it was fair given the uniqueness of the prototype and that only CN (two schemes... the Op. Life Saver scheme being a one off), Algoma Central, and Ontario Hydro being the only users I can think of.

I think the Alaska Railroad had three of the PSC vans. It would make a snappy alternate scheme.

That's interesting, I did not know ARR had those.  Were they acquired new?

Pud:

You forgot the NARC HSC cylindrical hoppers in trough and round hatch versions, and the 4000 cu ft rotary gondolas due very shortly.

Good times indeed.

The gondola looks to be the 52'-6" riveted version from National Steel Car with the tapers over one panel.

Definitely an option for PGE/BCR.

Nope.  The were "preowned". Not sure how many are still around. I've seen 1092 a couple of times over the past year. Here is a shot from last summer in MOW service when Gary and I took the Seward to Anchorage pax train.

Ontario Hydro/Hydro One is a one-off, secondhand. One car, but it was repainted at some point, so two paint schemes, but only on the one car.

The 6 Algoma Central vans were actually [re]built "new" for the AC by CN in 1976.

Also CN actually has at least three possible schemes: standard, international service (yellow cupola) and the Operation Lifesaver (one-off).

In addition to the ARR and GWWD cabooses, add to the list at minimum (basically all one-offs, and all secondhand former CN):

Reflecting on the announcements of new products and previously announced products that are soon to be released it appears that "da "nucks" here on TRW are being treated rather well when one considers the "upcoming booty"....

- snip -

FVM
CN versions of "new" locomotives (I haven't a clue what you new fangled guys call these things.... LOL)
PGE (ex Mil Rd) work coaches - mid 2013

- snip -

.... and I'm sure I've missed a few.... but "wow" what a 'rennisiance" for Canadian modelers....eh !

Mike, the FVM PGE ex-MILW coaches are being offered in the revenue paint scheme that they wore from mid-1957 until the 1966-1968 period.  When they went into work service, they were extensively modified - windows changed or blanked out, overhead water tanks added above the roof, stoves and the resulting smoke jacks installed, etc.  Of the six cars that the PGE acquired, three were smooth side and the other three had the distinctive MILW ribbed and skirted sides.  The FVM numbers are correct for the smooth side cars.

Cheers,

Scottl
