David,

How do you get teh parts to come out of the mold in areas like the "loop"? My experience is it will work, but not for long.

During my years in the ferroalloy business, I shipped container gons of alloys from the plant in WV to the plant at Exton, PA. Good old days route....B&O-Park Jct-RDG.

Secrets... you want my secrets... actually, no secret. Just use top-quality, Shore 10A (soft) mold material, and it works quite well. Not forever, but long enough to get some good castings. That said, these are not perfect; the modeler will need to clean up the openings just a little.

Didn't David want us to start a list of freight cars...

The TrainCat G22b gon would use these, correct?  I might just have to refit mine for some containers.

David,

Thanks for the reply and the "secret"!  I spent 10 years doing prototype and model work, and made tons of molds and castings, the Shore 10(and thereabouts) just didn't hold up for the qty I needed, I used 50+ Shore materials mainly.

I'm gearing up after many years to try and do some model casting work.

Lift rings installed on sub-masters, ready for final production molding.

There are a lot of variables in play here. Quality of the mold material, size of the master, depth of detail, desired yield, and so on. The crawlers, for example are all done with Shore 10 (first generation, out of necessity), and so far the molds have yielded 50+ castings and still going strong. Yes, they're not going to yield hundreds of castings, so whenever practical I make sure the masters survive so I can keep making new molds. Anything over Shore 20 would have torn the crawler masters apart (I don't use anything over Shore 30 except on stuff like flat walls); these containers are more robust than the crawlers, so production molds will be Shore 20. Loops may close up on the final product; we'll see.

Glad you like them. They're in the cooker; first production castings will be made tonight at midnight.

And now I have another friggin' set of projects to contemplate to justify using these things. Oh well, worse problems to have.

Are the same containers used in the G22 as the FM?
