As for your PB70, you basically added a set of double windows and removed the "M" section? Then you sawed off the car end and capped it on the "B?"

How did you attach your rain deflector things above the door? I'm having trouble keeping mine from falling off.

I decided to modernize my PBM70.
I know they modernized PB70s, and I couldn't find anything conclusive of PBM70s not being modernized, but this fits my era better and fits in with the rest of my headend cars.
What do yinz all think? Good decision? Bad?

Is this the Lima model? (if so, modified to what degree?)

Hey Cody, it's actually Model Power. I plated in the end windows, replaced the trucks, added a water tank, rebuilt the doors and shaved off some diamonds and added pin vents on the roof.

And repositioned the trucks. I filled in the holes with some JB Weld and put styrene over the plugged hole.

I could have never figured out that it was originally a model power since it looks amazing!
I'll have to keep my eye out for one. Sounds like something I can't botch too badly.

If you don't mind doing a little body work and some fabrication you can use just one stock car to make this version(above). The stock Lima body is 2.5' too long on the baggage end - luckily that's about the width of the mail door, so you cut that section out (floor and all). Glue the end back on and the truck is where it's supposed to be.The roof needs to be shortened to match the new length.
 the trucks are correct, so I mounted a MTL coupler on the baggage end one. I cut the coupler off the other, added steps and  a body-mount coupler (I might have moved it back, too).  I used thin styrene to make the seam plates over the baggage end  walls. The rain gutters are very thin styrene glued to the roof, then sanded down to thin ridges.
I had to cut two more coach windows (one each side) and replaced the big doors, and stuck on baggage stirrups.
The trick to using only one car is to cut the baggage end walls off and put them on their opposite sides. Then the baggage door is in the right place and the one PO window is paired with the added one to make 5 pairs a side. Like I said, some work but I don't have useless parts of sacrifice cars left over.

have found and am now following this thread, being a SPF and especially interested in PRR passenger service in the '50s and 60's.

I have not heard of the "diamond" that was mentioned early on (IIRC it was something removed from the roof)?

any clarification please. TIA

have finally tracked down a hellgate model B60b, and would certainly like to add some 70's

I do indeed plan to install steps. I have the GMM ones all assembled, but yeah, the MTL ones are better.

found the GMM ones online...not a clue as to where to get MTL steps...nothing listed on their website...does one have to sacrifice an MTL passenger car to get them?

The "diamond" patterns in the sides of the clerestory over the non-passenger areas should be chiseled flat.

Contact MTL directly to purchase passenger underbody parts for the steps.  They are better than using the GMM version, which is too narrow.
