C&NW green Con-Cor paint match
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:42:42 PM »

I need to patch paint a couple inch square of chipped out Bi-Level roof I snagged for a low price on eBay . To my shock Floquil CNW green is Gloss , never knew Floquil made a color in gloss . Can't find flat . I ordered Tru-Color C&NW green . and post ordering I found out that is gloss also . Is there a match for the Con-Cor C&NW green , or a method to match it with a known paint ? Is there a C&NW green flat oil based paint sold ? Thanks in advance .

The pollyscale CNW green has an unexpected semigloss sheen as well. I have not used the Badger Modelflex CNW green, but it might be worth trying.

I may be showing my ignorance, but can't you paint it with the gloss and then spray a clear flat overtop?

Not ignorant, it's just not common knowledge or even very logical.  But if the finishes are different, they have different refractive qualities whether they're uncoated or have a universal finish applied over them.  A matte finished, exact color match, stripe painted on a gloss field of the same color will appear darker or lighter depending on the angle of vision you view it at, with or without a top coat.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

My questions is (and I don't know and that's why I'm asking) but when this car was newly painted, wouldn't they (the RR) have used gloss paint?

Yes , but the Con-Cor model is flat and I am trying to avoid a total roof repaint because it wraps around the side where there is lettering on it .

About 15 years ago, I needed to make some Floquil paint glossy. I just added some Floquil gloss finish to the paint, as I remember. Is it possible to add Floquil flat finish (is there such a thing?) to the gloss paint?

Richie,
Can you get a good match to the color and then just dull coat the entire model so all has the same finish?

I just tried to add a coat of Dulcote on top of some brush painted Floquil CNW gloss green . Almost perfect , didn't think that color would change as much as it did . I think I will tape off from the top of the windows down and shoot the entire roof after feathering the chipped paint edges . Should come out near undetectable . Thanks for all your helpful ideas .

This is NOT a Wheels of Time  car, which had more, smaller windows.  This would be either the Concor or Rapido smooth side car but it is hard for me to be able to tell you exactly which one is which.

Wow , I didn't know Con-Cor made a bi-level also . Thanks Jim , you are correct . I will change WOT to Con-Cor as I can in my threads .
Here it shows both WOT and the Con-Cor cars in C&NW

The rapido couplers would also be a good hint of its origin.  The MT passenger trucks are good replacment for upgrading quality and coupler if you are not going with bodymount.

Maybe don't repaint the whole green area, mask just below the curve of the roof above the windows and repaint just the top green then spray the whole thing with flat clear. It might be just a hare different looking, but blaming it on glare or fading from the sun would not be out of line.

I will repaint the whole roof . Every stroke of the sandpaper to feather the chipped edges resulted in more chips . So I blue masked the whole roof top and just as I expected , not unlike a wax-job , when I removed it almost every piece of green came off , easy as pie . I already painter the window edges black or silver as need be , and blackened the inner shell with a Sharpie . I think it will look better than I got it .
