I need Southern Cabooses (or at Least Decals)

I know Athearn made a Southern bay window caboose, but they're hard to find, and I'm not sure their version was around in 1971. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Also, I know Atlas made a Southern caboose (cupola near one end), but they're hard to find too. I'm pretty sure they were around in 1971.

Also, does anyone know of anyone making Southern caboose decals? I know Microscale doesn't.

Hmm... hasn't Kiz reached
his questions allowed
quota yet...?

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

I heard the same thing about the SOu bay window. That's why I don't have any. If worse comes to worst, I'll reconsider.

I know Model Power makes a bay window caboose. They might work as stand-ins if I can only find decals.

My error... Model Power makes a Southern bay window. I wonder if the bay window is yellow. By the way, why did some cabooses get red bays and others get yellow bays? I used to know, but I forgot.

Hmm... Kiz has such a
hard life...EDIT: Kiz has
such a terrible memory
too...

"Also, I know Atlas made a Southern caboose (cupola near one end), but they're hard to find too. I'm pretty sure they were around in 1971."

Only a few steel cupola cabooses were ever rostered by the SOU and these were from Savannah & Atlanta and Norfolk Southern.  While the S&A cars were on the roster in '71 all five (three homebuilt and two ex-RDG) were still in S&A paint until the late-70s and the NS cab didn't become SOU until 1974.

SOU started the yellow bay window scheme around '71, using it on local cabooses that lacked radios as well as on some subsidiaries.  The Athearn cab is not accurate but until someone finally decides to do some in N what can you do.

Microsoft used to make a caboose set in N scale: microscale 60-4084

Maybe you can find a set on ebay.

Status of 60-4084 is "currently unavailable", not "discontinued".  It will be back in stock at some point.  You an email them directly and ask them when the set is scheduled to be reprinted.

Kiz,you might want to look at other decals.Often,a freightcar set,or a loco set may have what you need.I routinely use loco decals and boxcar decals on hacks and freightcars.Southern Switcher decals may have the correct size,or at least close lettering, and a set from say,an NS or B&O caboose or freightcar may have the proper small stuff. These days, with decals dropping off the edge of the earth,ya gotta be creative.I can't figure how Microscale thinks that by NOT selling decals, business will get better..I used to buy 10 sets or so a month, they've pretty much lost me as a customer, since they no longer make anything I need..

The Athearn SOU caboose is definitely a foob.  I think the prototype for that bay window caboose is a Southern Pacific car.  But it makes a reasonable stand-in, if it's in your era. I think the yellow bay window is wrong for my era (1983-86), but, as you now realize, there's nothing much out there for SOU cabooses. So, I have one and would suggest you continue the search.

For those interested, this is the caboose style (dated 1971) that I need a half dozen of:

Hey! I have an idea. Let's all ask Athearn or Atlas to make the Southern caboose I need.

Hmm... get another idea,
Kiz...

When I scratchbuilt factories, houses, etc., I used to cut out windows, but I could glue window castings in to hide the rough spots. I dread cutting out windows for which there are no pre-made frames.

Hmm... Kiz has got to
have everything his way...

Don't forget about Walthers, they did a bay window in Southern if you can find one.
I think their undec version came with multiple bays.

I looked at the Walthers caboose versions, but they all seem not quite tall enough. Could be me, I guess.
