Thank you very much, gentlemen! I'm humbled but very grateful for your kind words. Part 2 will cover more of the piping and cab details and of course the tender modifications. Maybe one day I'll go back and improve the pilots into better representations of ATSF types. Shouldn't be too hard. So many models, so little time...

I agree, it was an excellent article. Very informative.

I like the how-to examples which show how to make some very quick and easy "squish" molds using RTV putty (instead of the messy RTV liquid rubber).  This type of mold is ideal for simple castings like sand domes.  I also found the way the curvature was cast in the bottom of the steam domes (using brass tube) very clever!  That sure beats molding the bottom flat then trying to grinding the curvature into the part!  I learned something new!

I have to agree with Petski - that squish molding technique lends itself to all sorts of detail reproduction ideas, especially for those building fleets of locos.  I wonder how well it would work for diesels . . . .
