David, are you still planning on having water on the layout? Is that what the X's are for?

No, the Xs indicate cuts or fills. It's not looking as though I'll have any water features, especially since I've been contemplating adding structures to the top right and bottom left corners. About the most I might manage is some swampy areas along the bottom edge.

This is coming together beautifully. I like how you mock up and modify your buildings to build a coherent scene.

Thank you!

I made a little addition to the block of boring storefronts (and "little" is the operative word). While I was doing firehouse research, I came across the building to the left in the image below. It was one of those "I simply must model this" moments.

Only trouble is, I didn't have a place to put it. So, after making the facade, I held it a variety of locations on the layout until I found just the spot, right next to the block of storefronts.

Makes for a nice tight squeeze for the siding that runs next to it...

I don't know about that last one.

It's so small that it just seems a bit too whimsical.

The narrow space would make sense if it were deep, but looking at that the way it is, there's barely enough space for a spiral staircase to the second floor.

Agreed.  I think it would be a good spot for that little Tavern/Auto Parts Store from Will Models.

I was just downstairs trying to copy that building somehow.  8) But I didn't cut anything up yet.

I agree it looks pretty cramped. But I have been in some apartments in New York that make this look like a mansion.

It's easy enough to pop off the side of the building if I find myself deciding that it's perhaps too whimsical.

While I like the whimsical little guy, I see a few items that look out of place. First there is no rear door. Second the window of the connecting building enters below the potential roof the "the Whim", I assume you're gone fill it. The crown on "the Whim" is much to large. I think if those few items were changed it might be a much more believable building.

Thoughts?

I agree with the backdoor idea.To my way of thinking it needs a dividing wall between it and it's much larger neibor. The way it sets now it is just an addition to the next door neibor.

Other than that I like it,there were a lot of those narrow buildings that were built to fit any place they could.

Remember that you can barely see the rear of this building without being an N scale person.

Personally, I like that little add-on building.  The window that is interfering can easily be bricked over. I would leave the little guy just where he is. I don't think it is too whimsical.

I am really enjoying these build threads (both DKS and Chris333). It is amazing how much character both you guys have been able to fit into a modest space. Now that I finally have a rather large space of my own for the Beer Line, I have to admit being envious/contemplating the approach taken here. Just lovely work by both David and Chris. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Best wishes, Dave

Trouble with a back door is that it would open up right on the tracks...

Anyway, assuming it stays, the window on its neighbor will be bricked in, and a dividing wall added when the roof goes on.
