Trying to settle that exact question.  Leaning towards late 70's early 80's Conrail, but I do like my SD80MAC's and the 90's.  Maybe I will just do both!

1956 and 1980, with occasional forays into the early 1970s.  I did not vote because none of the categories fit.

I have followed the path of Dave V. and Bryan B. with modeling two eras.

Conrail: June 1984 and Pennsylvania Railroad: September 1957 (all diesel), both based in Western Pennsylvania.

I keep waiting for somebody to say something like "I'm modeling Tuesday, the 5th of October 1942 at 8:42 PM. It was a dark and stormy night"  :)

Diesel era, specifically 1974.  Technically it's mid June, so I can still run MILW's electrics, but since the motors themselves have to be freelanced, the date is also flexible.  Sometime in 1974, on a BN (ex GN) line, between Helena and Kalispell.  The MILW built a line from Great Falls to Marysville to serve the mines there, and electrified the Harlowton-Great Falls main and Marysville branch.

The MILW did plan a line to Marysville, which was a major mining center, served by the NP and GN from Helena, but they never built it.  One report I saw said they would come in from Missoula, but that seems to be the long way around...  On the other hand, a line from Helena to Kalispell would be quite practical, and with the original GN main going through Kalispell, would have been a nice shortcut.

I do two eras. My main era is 1996-1999 Conrail. And then I do the "alternate" thing like Dave V every once in a while;I then switch the layout out to 1950's B&M.
I WANNA SEE THE BOAT MOVIE!

Milwaukee Road, June 1972. Has to be summer, because that is a great season for beer. 1972 so I can have billboards for the Circus Parade, George Carlin at Summerfest (where he was subsequently arrested on obscenity charges), Nixon vs. McGovern campaign posters (I was the only one in my 2nd grade class election to vote for McGovern....I had the last laugh!).

Best wishes, Dave

My interest lies in the Rock Island and hope to model a scene from Iowa circa 1978. I am one of the few that likes the bankruptcy blue.

However, I started collecting (shamefully I might add, Lee) Chessie diesels initially. I will run CNW, MILW, CR, maybe some CGW, and a little IAIS for interest since they own a lot of the Rock's former infrastructure. I keep telling myself I will model the Maryland and Delaware too, but, as I enter my fifth year working for them part time, I think I will leave that alone.

My wallet knows no bounds, and I will buy whatever finds my fancy. I have modern day equipment too that will run behind my Rock power as a complete foob. Outside of this "little" tight knit community, no one would ever be able to tell.

Oh, and like someones else's signature, I have never met a covered hopper I didn't like.
